I have a 1971 square back. When the starter is in the car it will spin but not pop out. But when it is out of the car it works fine. Im thinking its the voltage regulator but in not sure. I also read in a book that i need to polarize. What is polarizing?
What's wrong? |

Starters are not polarized; that's for generators.
Probably a bad solenoid. Check your bushing in the tranny housing while the starter is out. |

I'd check the ground strap from the trans to the pan, and be sure the positive lug's connections are clean and tight.
My guess is when you crank it in car, the load to run the motor doesn't leave enough juice to operate the solenoid. |
