whats the deal they are the correct torque . i replced the lft side adn the right side carved out the spines in the drum. I replaced the right side and 3 days later the left side was ruined. its an 1835 with whatr i can guess is a stock transmission from the 66 its in. its costing me alot of money to by brake drums. its lowerd 2 splines in the rear as well.

You are not torquing them enough

Torque em to 275, drive it around the block, torque to 275 or higher, till you hit the next cotter key hole, put in cotter pin, and drive the shit out of it.

Are you tourqeing it to 250 lbs?

n8murphy Thu Nov 20, 2008 12:30 pm

im torqueing it to 250.

What year is you ride? not sure if its a 66' tranny, maybe its not, could be different size axles?

n8murphy Thu Nov 20, 2008 12:55 pm

its a 66 with a newer 1835. i diddnt build the engine or the car so im trying to fix whatever the po did wrong. its my only car so its problamatic at the moment. i use my wife's car when neccesary. the drums are 110 bucks a whack so i cant afford to go through more of em. the axles seem right and i dont think that part of the car was changed from stock though i dont know if a tranny from a 66 fits a dp 1600 but it is a swing axle tranny.

Hi,

Sorry about your troubles but very few people have a torque wrench that can measure this high value. May I ask how you KNOW they are properly tightened?
To go through 3 so quickly makes me suspicious that your value may be off a tad.

Torque Dude tool, or a metal pipe fitted over a regular 18" flex handle with a socket.

DrDarby Thu Nov 20, 2008 2:03 pm

How much lower than stock is the car and are the rear wheels cambered like crazy?

tirekicker Thu Nov 20, 2008 2:17 pm

the splines on the mains shaft are messed up. you need to replace it

n8murphy Thu Nov 20, 2008 2:43 pm

thought about the splines they may be worn a bit. its not cambered too bad like i said 2 outers down isnt that bad its not extreme or anything just a slight camber youd expect from a lowered swing axle.

Perhaps he paid attention in Physics class.

Torque = Force x Lever Arm

Take the desired torque, divide it by your weight, multiply the result by 12.

Measure that distance in inches from the center of the drive along the handle of your breaker bar. Mark the spot with tape.

Put the socket on the nut with the handle extending horizontally.

Put good wheel chocks on both sides of the tire.

Stand carefully on the tape mark. Don't bounce. If the wrench turns, put it back on the nut with the handle a bit above horizontal and repeat until the wrench no longer turns when you apply your weight.

Tighten until the next cotter pin hole lines up. Remember that there are two holes in the axle, so you don't have to turn the nut very far to get one of them lined up.

Insert cotter pin.

Done!

I use a 50 dollar on sale 1" drive harbor freight tourque wrench. I tourque all mine to 325 ft pounds. Im lower than "3 outer clicks" and I have 5000 miles on my drums.

john@aircooled.net Thu Nov 20, 2008 3:22 pm

it will also do this if you are using the Brazilian drums.

im wondering if theres somthing wrong with the splines themselves. I know my tranny mounts arent the best i get shudders in first sometimes that throw it right out of gear. I am sure this is also bad for those drums.

This is strictly concerning the length of the bare swingaxle by itself, and just some old written info (no source) I have recently found, but here goes:

VW swingaxle lengths

49-65 short 2260 26-11/16"

66 med 2265 27-13/16"

67-68 long 2270 28-7/8"

Have also read on this forum of sub-variants, like a short axle long spline 67 and a long axle long spline 68, so there's more somewhere....

Michael Fischer Fri Nov 21, 2008 7:43 pm

Up to 66 short axle short short spline.

67 long axle short spline.

68 long axle long spline.

Thats all there is.

I'm sure you have this right but...just in case---> Are you torquing it to 250 FOOT POUNDS or INCH POUNDS? (There is a bit of a difference.)

I really don't mean to imply that you are dumb...it's just that...well...shit happens.

VeeDubDoug Sat Nov 22, 2008 1:17 pm

i still think its an axle size prob, once you spin your first drum, you know to tight'n them suckers!

If it is an axle size problem, shouldn't the drum be able to move on the splines after the nut is tightened? That would seem to be a pretty strong indication that something is amiss.
