  View original topic: Side window out of a Vanagon

Does anybody know if the middle side window out of a early Vanagon will fit in a Bay. It would be the one on the driver side not the sliding door window. I have a sliding side window out of a Vanagon that I want to put in my Bay but I just don't know for sure if it will fit. I held it up next to mine and it looks like the right size but I would like to know for sure before I try it.
Thanks

It depends on what you call a Vanagon>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>79...yes>>>>>>>>>>>>80 up... no.

sure, it will fit. here's how.
cut the window opening out of your bus. use a swazall or sharp chisel and a hammer.
cut the window opening out of the vanagon, being sure to leave plenty of extra metal around the edges for a flange. use same tools as above.
drill some holes and pop rivet the vanagon window opening to the opening you cut in your bus. use some black silicon between the metal surfaces before riveting, so that it makes a nice seal.
spray paint the edges to blend the paint.
install the vanagon window in its original hole you just attached to your bus.
voila! finished.

'79 isn't a Vanagon, it's a Bus. Vanagon production started in 1980.

I am pretty sure it will fit, I was just hoping to find someone that has already done it. If you hold it up to the windo in my bus now it looks like it is for a Bay. Heck, I would have thought it was for a Bay if I had not pulled it out of the Vanagon myself. Again this is not the sliding door window (that one is definately bigger), this is the one right across from it.

Don't think it will fit.
There are sliding bay windows,
And there are sliding vanagons.
I was informed they differ

the van windows WILL NOT fit into a bay,
I have to extend a bay Jalousie about 1.5" top to bottom to fit into a vanagon's side opening.
therefor the van opening is bigger then a bay opening.
side to side they are damn skippy.

though if you would like i'll have buncha van sliders available in the spring when i put jalousies into all of the vanagon campers in the family.

ventillation while camping is > euro styling. IMO

No way, no how.

I have both bay and Vanagon sliders outside, so I measured them. [Instead of giving 'about' figures]

Measuring the outside frame where the seal rests around the edge end to end [length]:
Vanagon = 41 3/4"
Bay = 41 1/4"
Vanagon is 1/2" longer.

Measuring top to bottom [height]:
Vanagon = 16"
Bay = 14 1/2"
Vanagon is 1 1/2" taller.

Measuring the center post where it meets the frame:
Vanagon = 15 1/4"
Bay = 13 3/4"
[same 1 1/2"]

WCM outer seal part #:
Vanagon = 253-8411
Bay = 241-321A-L/R

The only part of a Vanagon slider that may work on a Bay slider would be the felt on the center post.......

vanagon ( bus T3) production started in 1979 but even then the windows are bigger than a bay.

@ gary , you wrote: "I held it up next to mine and it looks like the right size"

there's an amazing invention called a tape measure. and it's real easy to use. :idea:

Yeah--August of '79, which makes it a 1980 model year. There are no 1979 Vanagons.

Hey Karl, don't forget about the sliding window latches, those can be used by us bays, and how about the nylon bearing that the window slides on, I have cannibalized those parts from Vanagon sliders. But the felt, that is a new one on me.
