View original topic: Grinding 3rd gear. What to do?

I bought a restored 61' this summer. It has an H5 engine which I believe is a 65'. I do not know what the tranny is. None of the numbers are matching. I have put 4k miles on it since I bought it. This is my first vw, so I am learning as I go. It is the funest car I have ever had. I have put it away for winter as the guy I bought it from had never driven it in the rain.

I was down shifting from 4th to 3rd and did not have the clutch fully engaged. I grinded it a bit but did not force it. The next day as I headed to work it popped out of third. By the time I drove 20 miles it would not go int 3rd. It will just grind as it seems the shifter is only half way into 3rd. I tried to force the shifter into the 3rd position and it then would not go into any forward gear. I put it onto a trailer to get it home (in reverse). After sitting a week the tranny would go into 1,2,4, and reverse. It would still grind in 3rd. What should I do? Is it best to just buy a new tranny? Or pull it and have it looked at. I do not know the miles on it, but the guy who restored it said that a shop went through it and it looked good,

[in a Darth Vader voice] use the search CRP, the search...

I'm also having the same symptoms. I am going to do a bushing/clip/holder install this weekend. I figure start at the cheaper and (relatively) easier solutions and work your way up.

I did do a search....couldnt find anything that matched.

I put in a new shift rod bushing this summer as there was a lot of play in the shifter. So I dont think it is that.
