Where is the ignition usually? On the dash or right beside the steering wheel column? I have a hole on the left side of the ashtray and I am thinking that is where the ignition should be??

Yes that is where it is supposed to be by the ashtray

Cool!! Since I need a new ignition (PO lost keys) That is where it will go. Does it have to be a 12 volt since I am going to change it over from 6 volt? I found a good deal on a 6volt ignition with a key??

The ignition switch is not voltage specific. If the car had the optional column lock the ignition switch would be there. Most USA bound cars though had the swith to the left of the ashtray.

A switch is a switch, no matter what the voltage is. You should be fine!

FYI- In Europe in the early and mid 60s, VWs came standard with column/ignition locks, in the US, they did not, although they were an option. That's why the owner's manual shows both locations, here's the appropriate page from the early 1962 manual:

Ok found something today when I was spraying PB-Blaster on the seat rails. Under the dash alittle where the ignition is supposed to be is a little pushbutton. Looks stock, nothing like you would buy at Nappa or something. What do you guys think?

It's hard to say for sure. I'd be tracing the wires going to the switch. Got pictures?

What kind of switch is it? A pushbutton, you mean one that is springloaded like a doorbell, and only connects when you push it, but it doesn't stay on unless you hold it down? That could be for like, a windshield washer pump, or a bypass around the starter switch.

I can't stay out of this. That is a push button for the starter. Common replacement when ignition switch goes bad (or he loses keys at Lilluth Fair concert)- and owner is closer to NAPA than dealership. My hunch is switch went bad- but still allowed contact when running (on: first click). button replaced "start" position of switch (2nd click)- much like hot wiring the car each time is was driven. Hopefully the PO didn't hog out the ignition switch mounting hole too largely when he added the button (a screw secures your switch from directly underneath)... The things POs do to wreck cars prior to sale! good luck. brad
