| i'm thinking of adding one of my spare bolt on roof racks to the blue square. everyone of these i've ever seen is bolted on to the 2/3s of the roof. i'm trying to figure out if i want to mount mine on the front 2/3s of the roof. does anyone have on mounted forward? if so, can you post a photo of it that way? thanks! |

My rack looks to be made for a Notch or Fasty because it's the short style. But I have mine mounted toward the front. The previous owner of the rack had it mounted toward the rear and it dint look right to meeh. Sorry it's the most 'side-profile' type pic I have.

There are 'Rafters' in line with the B pillar and the front of the hatch hinges, to support the roof.
The rack mounting screws need to line up with those rafters - otherwise, your roof will cave in if you try to carry anything on the rack.
The rack is also narrower in the rear, following the shape of the roof.
Here's a pic of where the front screws line up with the B pillar. If you line this up, the rear mounts will line up with the hinge support.

Here are some pictures from a square without a headliner, for reference in lining up the screws.
The front rafter is centered on the B pilar, if it isn't obvious in the photo; you'll want to hit the center rib of that piece
It helped to put some weight on the rails to hold it down and keep the 'grid' contoured while drilling.
It should go without saying - measure several times to make sure it's centered before you drill.

I don't know if you really looked at your spare rack or not, but they do have a taper to them. At least the 3 or 4 I've looked at do, including the one I have out back. They're wider in front than they are in the rear. This might look ackward on the car with it kicked forward. |
