View original topic: Quick check for engine condition

I saw on this site once (don't remember which forum and probably doesn't matter) two things to check for to get a rough idea about an engine's internal condition. One was to remove the oil fill cap while engine warm and running and press palm of hand over the hole a few seconds and listen and feel for air escaping when removing hand and to look for oil on your hand as a check for blow-by and ring condition. The other was to remove the coil wire from the coil and have someone crank the engine over while you checked for...the rest I don't remember. Can anyone help me out on this? My brain seems to have locked up. Thanks.

well i'm certainly no expert but that sounds like part of a compression test.

I am not sure how valid those tests are. For example if you take off the oil filler and put your hand over it you will feel pressure in my engine, but it does not have blow by. You will also burn your hand if you do it on a modern engine such as the vw 1.8T.
The second check you mentioned is somewhat valid. You let the engine run and take off one wire at a time from the distributor and ground it. The logic being you should notice a drop in engine speed. If there's one cylinder that's got less compression than the others when you remove the wire, you will notice no effect in engine speed or only a smaller effect.

You don't have to ground it, just pull it off of the distributor cap.

Another quick check of internal condition is with the engine off, pull the crank pulley back and forth. If you can move it AT ALL, the end play is way excessive and indicates a rebuild is needed. It should only move a few thousandths of an inch, not more than .005 or .006, which is probably less than you could tell without a dial indicator.

Thank you for the info, guys. Good stuff.
