| Given the shape that car is in, even laying on its side, that isn't really shocking. It is a military vehicle after all, they would have been on the receiving end of all kinds of abuse, explosives, bad drivers, etc.. It looks like a WWII picture, so that would have been a common occurrence. |

| Those are pretty cool skid plates that Kubel has. Do you think that something like that could be adapted for a more modern 70's Thing? |

Check out THIS flipped kubel...
It was taken out of action by a P-51 Mustang while retreating from allied forces in the vicinity of Villers-Bocage, Normandy, France on June 7th, 1944.
In all seriousness, this happened back in July of 2006. I have never met Ian personally, but via his posts he seems like a really good guy. I'm glad that nobody was injured in this accident, and that he's since been able to get his Thing back up to snuff. |

| I read about Ian's mishap on his website (I think). He was the "A" driver (ie, he wasn't behind the wheel). I agree, that he seems pretty cool and I'm glad that no one was hurt and that his 181 survived too. |

| It's a good thing for rollbars! Doesn't even look likes it scratched  Roll it over drive it home. Is that all Ian had to do? |

Stock VW... but for the type 82 Kubelwagen.
Has nothing to do with the 181/Thing. |

Nope. The paramedics insisted that we ride to the hospital on backboards, where they found none of us were hurt. The car rode on a flatbed to a yard - it was a bit more hurt. Some bent up suspension parts, broken windshield, bent hood, bent rims, broken engine mounts, bent up engine tin (it jumped around). Very lucky to land in tan bark, but there still were (and are) a bunch of scratches too and I still can't get the body or roll bar perfectly strait. It was definitely not a trivial event for the car.
Without the roll bar, we would not have survived. Including my 4yo and 6yo boys who were lap belted in the rear. Roll bar and seat belts, and I was the only one with any injury at all - just a small scrape. |
