Hi. I've been reading the posts here for a while now and have learned a lot. I have a '73 Super that I bought about six months ago and been trying to unscrew it up since then. The prev. owner didn't have a clue (I don't either but at least I'm a mechanic).
I have seen similar posts, but none that solved my particular issue.
I'm on my second carb, a H30/31 with an 009 dist. The first carb was junk and I never could get the mixture right. At least they warrantied it out. The second was great out of the box, no adjustments. But.....
After about a week or so, when I came to a stop the idle wouldn't drop back to the about 900 or so. Looking at the the throttle arm, the idle arm was stopping about a 1/8th of an inch away from the stop. After two tear downs of a new carb, I finally found the problem.
When the linkage for the accelerator pump was pressed in, it looks like it was hammered in too hard and it was binding the pump mechanism, tight enough to hold the throttle open against two springs.
A couple of gentle taps on a putty knife between the linkage and the housing fixed the problem. I've attached a picture to show what I am talking about.
I hope this helps someone else and thanks for all the advice.
