I have a 71 Super Beetle I can't seem to shift gears. The car was being restored, when I got it back I was told there was a problem with the clutch pedal, it was stuck to the floor, and the car would not shift into another gear. I have removed the engine and the transmission still doesn't shift....If I need to change the transmission can I install one from a 73 and newer?

The pedal on the floor could be a number of things:
- Clutch cable is broken
- Clutch cable has become un-hooked inside the tunnel by the pedal cluster
- Hook on clutch pedal shaft has broken off inside the tunnel
- Clutch cable is the wrong type for the car
- Pressure plate has gone bad
I highly doubt that there is anything wrong with your transmission. With the engine out, you can see the whole system - the end of the clutch cable, the arm it hooks to, and the throwout bearing. There's really not much to go wrong.
As for not being able to shift, try rolling the car a little bit to put the gears in a different spot. They might just not be in the right position to mesh together. |

Will also suggest that you check to see if there's lube in the transmission, you can also peer through the filler hole and look at the 1-2 slider to see if it's stuck or something.
It's also possible the hockey stick in the transmission nosecone is broken or not installed properly. This will prevent shifting. |
