I have a 69 with a 1600cc DP and I am thinking of upgrading my carbs to either dual kads or 2bbl progressive carbs. which one gets better mileage and performance ? what are the pros and cons of these carbs?

rizzag Thu Aug 07, 2003 7:56 pm

2 bbl progressives are total crap(sorry for the harshness but thats how i feel) and on a type one the adjustment screw is jammed against the fanhousing so you cant even really adjust the damn thing, they always seem to have huge flat spots too.

kadrons are great for mild performance/reliabilitty/easy maintanence. i have them on my bus and almost never have to adjust them.

hey rizzag. what are you runnin' for a motor?

rizzag Fri Aug 08, 2003 7:04 am

1776 with a engle 100 cam and straight cuts

Jeff, What's your take on the straight cuts? I've never had em but hear they can be loud. I know my bus was like a big damn echo chamber!

i love the sound of them, i only hear them till about 2k rpms then the motor and road noise take over.

Rizzag... What linkage are you using withyour kadrons? Seems like everyone I talk to says the kadron linkage sucks and to use someone elses. I happen to have a set that I want to put on my 1600dp ... But they are missing the aircleaners( any suggestions on where to find?) and they have the original linkage.

i just have the new style empi linkage, they are a new kit. anyone who sells empi proucts will have aircleaners for them.

Hey Air,

I know you didn't ask me but a lot of folks suggest the Scat Kadron linkage. I got mine (along with aircleaner as.) from AJ at Low Bugget:

Hope this helps. I'll be putting mine together soon. I figure one more weekend at the beach with the kids and them starting tearing into it! I'm installing dual Kads, headers & a QP, .034 dizzy, etc., etc. BUT I'm not a mechanic so who knows how long it'll take <LOL>.

I put the Scat linkage on my 63 Rat and I really like it. The installation took a few minutes to figure out 'cause the instructions provided suck. But once they were installed they work great. I no longer have the problem of linkage popping off like I did with my worn out kadron linkage.

I've got the bugpak linkage- which I'm happy with, I got it because it was available locally and I was ready to put it on that day- didn't want to wait around for one.

This got quickly away from the original question :!: I did "upgrade" at one time to a Webber progressive. It is definitely an improvement over stock. However, once I did the Kadrons I was sold on them. Actually, once I had a float problem with one of them so I went back to the progressive. Well all that did was RUSH the repair on the Kadrons  I now run a pair of Dellortos which I'm very happy with BUT I still have the Kadrons as a spare and I did sell the progressive.

Also mentioned was the linkage on the Kadrons. Mine are pretty old so I don't know what they offer now but what came with mine had some really weak designed clips that when they wore out their answer was to buy a new linkage since the clips were not available by themselves. Since it doesn't get any CHEAPER than ME, I found out that the couplings from any old Mercedes Benz in the junk yard will replace them clips perfectly and will never wear out :!:

Good luck :!: :)

Actually, an upright engine, would be the only configuration that I would use a progressive on. At least they have heat risers to keep that POS progressive from icing up. But yes, they are a pain to set up properly and hard to work around once installed. A lot of off road guys seem to love them.
