There were two different windshields.....one up to half way though 66 and one from 66.5 to 74
The early one is 17 and a quarter inches high and the later one is 17 inches high |

The hole where the windshield goes remained the same. Boat_Builder is correct about the glass size. The difference are the seals. Late glass-Late seals, Early glass-Early seals. I have a 1960 and I put later glass (all I could get in Hawaii) with the late seals and they fit perfect with trim and all. Give Mike at House-of-Ghia a ring he can hook you up. 8)

I believe you need to match up seals/trim/windshield i.e. late seal/late trim/late windshield will work, as will early seal/early trim/early windshield.
Any other combo will give you fits. One exception is the Cal-look seal from WolfsburgWest, which should work with any windshield. However, in that case, no trim is used.

Word to the wise -- MidAmerica Corvette Motorworks is the Wal Mart of the automotive world. Cheap junk that's misrepresented. Check out their feedback in the Buyer/Seller forum.

Deal with someone who *knows* Karmann Ghias -- House of Ghia. Mike posts here from time to time and he'll treat you right. |

Most all glass today is 17" (smaller size). To install a late glass/late rubber in a pre-66.5 Ghia I would try applying a bead of silicone on the edge of the glass before installing. Allow silicone to completely set before applying the rubber. Personally, I have not tried this. But I would think this would help the fit a little better.
Any thought? |

We got 18 of them made. Theres not much to see unfortunately. I'm finding mine very handy for keeping my screen clear of fog, although it will not clear heavy condensation. I haven't heard any feedback from anyone else yet.. |

Yeah everything arrived. I think there is one person in Australia waiting for his, but that is my fault (forgot to send his cheques off!).
I wired mine up with a standard relay and a simple switch. I brought a wire directly from the battery, alongside the tunnel and up under the dash. I fitted an in-line fuse close to the battery. |

Would anyone be willing to give an exact measurement of the height of a late windshield?
I've been struggling with installing a windshield that I got from a local glass shop. It seals fine on the sides but I can't it to seal correctly only the bottom. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or this window is just a little too small.
The window I am struggling with is about 426 mm / just a touch over 16 3/4s inches.
thanks |

KGPR and House of Ghia catalogues both agree that the late windshield is 17" (66.5-74) and the early is 1/4" larger (56-66.5)...which doesn't help you much as your glass is shallower that the smaller.
If yours doesn't fit with the seals that are currently available you might have to buy another windshield. :?
Give Mike at HOG a call and see what he suggests. |

Thread re-direct: Are the *rear* coupe windshields all the same? I don't recall ever seeing more than one listed, even from vendors more reputable than MAM.
I'll be in the market for rear glass for my 11/58 coupe this year. The PO broke the original when stripping the car out for resto. :( |

Thanks John.
I will follow your advice and give Mike a call.
If anyone has an original window lying around I would appreciate it someone could take measurement. I'm imaging having this conversation with the glass shop:
me: I need to return this window, it's the wrong size. Its 16.77 inches and, according to this catalog, it should be 17 inches.
Them: I'm sure the catalog is rounding up. 16.77 inches is 17 inches.
me: Why would they say that 17 1/4 inches is 1/4 shorter and not 1/2 shorter?
Them: I've been in business for 10 millions years and installed 15 million windows . . . |
