EspenX, is the face of that dash a piece of contoured flat sheet? The lines near the vent are different. It's really interesting. I like it.

It is the original dash of a 1969 European bay, it's how it came from the factory.

The paint on my dash wasn't lurking under anything :) European early bays came like this originally - no padding on the dash.

It is/was a fire vehicle, and the black box under the dash controls the sirenes and flashing blue lights.

nice. I find the weird padded dash ugly. Don't have them over here in Aus either.

My earlyBay has the dash the same color as the body, the later bay is a matte black, both plain old metal. The early Bay needs a bit of work.

Cheers, A.

How'd ya get it to sit in there backwards like that? :o

It must've happened during the accident that set off the air bag

I really like the metal dash, kind of Euro or Brasilian I think. Also, if you do mods like guages and switches and such one can always return it to stock with the replacement of the plastic cover.

Well done, Mark

Here is an update since my last post when the dash was red. Im almost done and just have to do a few more things to make it complete. For the most part though, its 99.9 % done...

Would love to see that in person before I do mine. You planning on going to any FL shows with it this year?

I like it! Looks like a good winter project... 8)

not meaning disrespect, ugly but better than all beat up I guess. It just looks unfinished like someone ripped the pad off and then painted it. I would be uncomfortable in that bus. Too harsh.

Most European buses had metal dashes until the end of production. The only difference in the European dashes is that there are no holes for additional switches or vents in the lower corners.

I like the metal dash, but find the glove box door and instrument cluster to be out of place. I am not a fan of the stock dash and have considered doing this myself, but would have to have a new glove box door and instrument cluster fabricated that could be painted to match.

My plan is to build new ones out of birch to match the rest of my interior. However, I first have to get Mellow Yellow on the road, so it will be a while before I tackle this project.

The irony with this thread is that in Europe, the US dash was an upgrade which few people wanted to pay more for.

Ok I'm curious, the OP painted his steering wheel with appliance paint.

Anyone else done this??

How well does it hold up/look over time?

I would say it could hold up well if properly cleaned and after painting, putting it in a warm to hot spot like on the dash of a closed vehicle of a hot interior or out in the sun on a hot day on black top to better cook the paint on.

I painted my steering wheel with black appliance paint in November 2008. It has held up fine and has no chips etc. It can also be wiped with a damp rag if needed it it has a very nice gloss.
