1968 swinger w/ 1600DP.

I pulled to motor yesterday to start fixing stuff from an overheat and was looking to see if I need a tranny seal when I noticed the bellhousing has a fresh groove all the way around the inside. No cranking problems, no noise from the rear I could hear over the engine. What gives?
I'll throw a pic up directly.

Check and see if your endplay is way out of wack.

Yep. Grab the flywheel and see if you can move it.

if its not end play issues just a thought but it could have wrong flywheel for the trans,i think the 12 volts have to be clearenced or the 6 volts cant remember, on one of them you have to clearence the transmission inside the bell housing to make the flywheel work

68 was 12 volt.

Unable to get detect any end play. Looks to be a mismatch of parts, but I'll check the endplay again when I get more crap off the motor.

Has anyone else seen this or know the cause? I've got the same problem but the flywheel doesn't seem to have any play. I'm not quite sure what's causing it.

engine bolts might of been loose and engine slightly moved?

VWpwner4life Mon Aug 10, 2009 9:35 am

That's entirely possible cause I was missing the top left engine bolt

Ace Mon Aug 10, 2009 11:09 am

If that bolt is missing, then engine has been out. If there are no shavings anywhere, it may be an old injury.

If you put an engine with a 12 volt flywheel in a 6 volt trans case that's what it looks like if you use the motor to clearance the case. If there are no fresh magnesium chips then maybe this is what's happened?
