I have looked in my Haynes and my Bentley on how to do this and the first shows info and pics that do not look at all like my 78 convert. doors. The second does not even show window or regulator removal - Any help is extremeley appreciated --- finishing up paint prep!!!javascript:emoticon(':?')

The ones shown in the Bentley are for the Sedan but the Vert unbolts in much the same fashion. The lack of Vert coverage in the Bentley is a disappointment.

I do not even see that - it is not in the body section????

What I meant is that the doors shown in the Bentley are for the Sedan and not Vert. The Bentley can be vague at times, just as in this case where there is little to no information on this procedure. These manuals were more printed for a trained VW tech so the more easier things such as this aren't even printed.

I checked all the books I have (Bentley, Haynes, Clymer, and Haynes resto guide) and on page 100-104 is the only one that has information for the Vert door, that being the Haynes Guide to Beetle Restoration.

The picture drawn is very simple and will not help much. Here is the text:

1. To remove the regulator proceed as follows (after door trim is removed).
2. On the passenger side, take off the arm rest support bracket after taking off the upper support screw.
3. Remove the lower screw from the bottom of the front window run channel.
4. From now on, have someone support the glass to prevent it from falling. Take out the six bolts holding the regulator in place.
5. Press the regulator inwards and push the window lifting linkage towards the lock until the two rollers in the lifting channel are free.
6. From the rear edge of the door, loosen the upper and lower retaining screws of the rear window run channel.
7. The window complete with the rear run channel can be lifted out of the door.
8. The rear channel screws go into captive nuts which can be moved around to adjust the position of the window.
9. The front channel is cemented into position and can be replaced when the vent frame is removed.
10. It would seem that early Cabriolet window sealer strips are just clipped into place while the later ones are held with screws as well. These are prone to seizing solid so apply plenty of releasing fluid well beforehand.

Thanks for your help superman!!
Unfortunately, those directions do not seem right either. There are two chanels and two screw - nut combos at the bottom of each (captive nuts?). The rear chanel also has a bolt supporting it toward the top of the door and is accessed in the jam part of the door. Once I removed this and then 3 bolts that held on the regulator, I could move the window in a way so that I could slide it along the support on the bottom so that the two square slides lined up with square holes in the support and.... yeah the window is out!!
The second chanel is part of the wing window frame. I would be great to take this out too.... but though it seems lose, it will not slide out of the door frame?????????

Sorry that didn't help. I've only done one Vert window regulator, and that was 12 years ago so I can't quite recall.

If you want, go to the forums board of my SBO! site (link in signature) and post your question in the Vert forum. There are a few there that may be able to help you.
