I missed you by 6mos. I'm at the point in the build where I'm assembling it for the last time (hopefully).

Alrighty I know you all are keeping up with me on this one.
This past weekend was all about steering and rear suspension mounts.
First off I am using a thing steering box as a center steer.

Here is the mock up

Here is the upper Shock mounts

Part of the lower shock mounts

Please post ideas and comments.

Are you going to make the upper rear shock mounts double shear? I just finished replacing mine (similar to your setup). The bosses were welded into 1/4" plate, after a few jumps the bolt ended pointing downward when the boss bent the plate. The mounts looked pretty stout to me before I bent the crap out of em. A good (Samba Worthy) jump will want to flex the mounting plate on a single shear. 8)

This is what I came up with, I'm hopin it holds up.

It is looking good. What engine are you using? With access to a laser cutting system I would of thought those rear upper shock mount plates would of had a nicely gut VW in them for weight reduction. :P

Right now she has a stock 1600 dp. Plans to up to 1776 but that is after she is finished.

Never know what you may find on the rail. You will like the brackets I have planned for them.

looks great. longer WB will get you in the whoops better.

riNR Mon Mar 02, 2009 7:17 pm

What rear arms are you running? Look pretty long....did you slide the tranny back?

DirtGhost Mon Mar 02, 2009 8:29 pm

Yes they are long 3 x 3 but I do not know who makes them.. Yes the tranny will be slid back by 1 inch and lowered .5 inches

riNR Tue Mar 03, 2009 5:47 am

Funny, they look like a lot more than 3 X 3 in the pictures.

Guys I have a question for all of you that is following this thread. I cannot make up my mind weather to have tree bars on this. So please post what you think about it.

Please post about tree bars.

If nothing else tree bars make great steps to help us oldsters to get in. My wife likes them better. Helps with the short legged people.

Yes i know all about the short people. Thank you for your comment

I say go with the Tree Bars, you could make them look cool and it would help with getting in and out. you should really double shear those rear shock mounts as well, they stick out way too much, or at least run some gussets off the top of them and to the plate steel.

EDIT: you should do like this, the gray would be diamond plate/whatever and would go up to act as a bit of fender.

DirtGhost Fri Mar 13, 2009 8:55 am

Yes that is getting done this weekend. Thank you about tree bars

SpenceSuper11 Fri Mar 13, 2009 9:00 am

Do you have any ideas on how you would do them or are you only asking if you should do them?
