I'm looking at getting my Ghia chemically stripped and e-coat applied before getting it repainted. I've got some rust starting ot bubble through the paint, and want to make sure it doesn't happen again any time soon.

Has anyone had their shell e-coated? Does anyone know of a good place to have it done in the northwest?

I saw your topic and I remember seeing an ad at the Detroit Autorama last year which highlighted their ability to dip parts and small cars. Their fliers they handed out had a yellow Karmann Ghia on the cover. They took the Ghia and stripped it down and dipped the body and then each of the doors, decklid, and hood seperately. The finish was amazing and I coud not see a flaw from the pictures they had. I asked about any ill effects from the process and was informed that there were none. The paint travels into areas preventing moisture from pentrating and forming rust. They had the card dipped in a chemical stripper then boiled to counter the chemical before the process. I asked about the cost, but cannot remember what they told me in general. They did inform me that during the baking process the finish was ultra durable preventing the paint from being scratched from normal issues. I forgot what they said about paint repair techniques if the car was damaged. If I had the money I would do it, but I cannot for go that kind of cost at this point. I am going to try and find that flier or link to their website...if I can remember. Okay I found it...I know that this is not in your state, but perhaps you can get some of your questions answered.

I just had my '57 beetle body acid dipped and e-coated. Before I did, I sandblasted all the rot in my driveway. Then I spent the next couple of years welding and grinding. In my opinion, it's better than bead blasting. Well worth the money. Just call the closest acid dipping shop around and they should know where to go for e-coating. The place that acid dipped mine, trucked it out of state to an e-coat facility. I have couple pics in my gallery of it after I got it back.

Thanks Dave. In the last six weeks I have managed to finish all the bodywork and scuffed the e-coat. This weekend I'm hoping to spray the filler primer and start blocking. The original color is polar silver. Anyhow, I added a few more pics of my progress in my gallery.

Did you have it e-coated in WI? Round ballpark for price?
Tks, Pat

I know this is an old thread, but just called on this for my beetle last week. I am also in WI. Restoration Specialists in Franklin WI gave me a quick verbal quote of 2k for Dip and E-Coat. Dip is done in Wis, and then shipped to MI for the e-coat. Shell only, no doors hood or decklid at that price.
