Very nice parts!

Is it found any differencies/development for common body parts between body #6 and #31? Or is there even available original pictures/drawings for the actual body number?

Yes. I would love to find out what are the differences between the low and high numbers. Logic suggests there must have been some kind of evolution in details. We know the major differences such as the door, deck lid, hood handles and of course the hood and deck lid corners and other areas already identified, but there must be more.

Christian has access to a lot of photos and original drawings for reference and comparison to the vw38/31.

Hello,
today was a super day - my friend Jacek and Thomas from Poland came and brought me a big surprise :-)
Jacek found in Breslau ( Wroclaw ) and orginal steering wheel from a 1938 beetle. These wheels were just used an the first beetle and not on other cars . To this moment there are just 2 wheels of these known - so we are now on a good way already to get the car on the street with lots of orginal parts.
Last week wendsday we started to restaure the 38

Is the 38 steering wheel also handmade?

No, the wheels were made from Bosch and not handmade.
Jacek talked with a militaria collector on a swapmarket about the 38 projekt and he said that he had that wheel - it was on a old kubel.

First of all I would like to say sorry to my boss I spend all day reading this thread :wink:

I take my hat off to everyone that is invloved in rescuing this gem. from finding it to giving it life again. =D> =D>

Crazy idea, but maybe others would agree. Once the car is done it should go on a world tour or at least to Cali :wink:

Absoutly incredible I wonder how many other unknown VW38 parts are in collectors hands. I am dying to see the floor pans you use. Will they be hand made or is there a set of Originals as well as Fenders head lights everything.

Christian, there must be an "old vw deity" watching over this project! Really, how else can you explain finding a chassis, steering wheel, and all the other stuff for the '38?

Seriously though, this just shows that the prototypes were parted out and parts used for subsequent vehicles. The art is now to recognize those parts when you see them.

Wow. You can't find rarer parts than that. Makes you wonder what other rare parts will come creeping out of the woodwork for this project. I can't remember reading from what or where the axles and gearbox came from :?:

Come to speak of it; Christian, what will be the plans when this car is finished? Will it be shown at exhibitions or just in the Grundmann collection?

On a side note; is there a website (besides www.vw38.de) dedicated to the Grundmann collection? Would love to see some more rare of the rarest!

This car has more original parts than my own 2003 Fiat!
A little bit off-topic: I'm dying to see the VW 30 sitting in your garage come back from the dead. I've even started a 1:18 scale model of this #26, will post some pics soon.
I guess I'll have to make a 38 #6 really soon if I want to have it finished before the genuine one :-)

You know, when I first join the Samba, I was on the Split Forum and looked at the parts section, and there was an original 1938 Fuel pump..amazing to think that things like that are still around and I've always been curious to know how people come across rare parts like that, and if they even realize their initial value when the find them.

Today coming home from work I was thinking about this steering wheel, really amazing find. But something else crossed my mind (not that difficult with soo many empty space here): starting with it's documentation/known history, is there any chance to find out what happened to the first VW38, IIIA 43001?
Probably it's gone for good, but may be interesting (albeit sad) to know how it meet its demise.

Just a quik question on that steering wheel. It appears to have a rubberized grip, is that so? it even looks to have a raised rib running around it much like a 70's-80's grant steering wheel. Again vw way ahead of it's time. :wink:
