They way we find parts :
i heard from a friend that a long time vw collector in Berlin one time bought a lot of KDF and NOS KDF parts that came from the KDF headcourters in Berlin.
This weekend i visitet him and i found these parts.
The metall covers for the cylinder are NOS in orginal grey paint ( just normal KDF :D ), the coke cable is also NOS and it is the right one for the 38 - without any sign ( L or H ) and the best part is the orginal manifold for the 38 - it is different than the later or even the early 40 or 41.
So step by step we are getting the car together
Christian

Yeah, actually I talked Christian into selling it to me, I'll make him a repro for the '38. Wasn't easy, and cost me huge $$$$, but in the end, I have the centerpiece for my intake museum....!

Just take it down to Midas Muffler and I'm sure they could bend up something close that would work on the '38
Truly amazing the parts coming together for this project. As always, thanks for sharing and doing such an outstanding job! |

Is this a 'to be painted ' items or will the hand numbering be visible on the final car?

They look to have the same number, not a pair? |

I think those were made to be universal (R/L). It wasn't until they welded on the outside part that goes over the plug holes and has the cylinder numbers that they became side-unique. |

I am not sure about that john, The cilinders are not straight oposite. Take a look at a normal cover and you see that this will not work.
It is however AMAZING what they find, I'll take my hat of for the whole team and people who are looking for parts...In my barn I turned over every single part I can see that fits the 38 car...Sadly all the parts that I found are already found by Christian also. So I had to put them back in the barn. I tougth I could sell him that NOS intake I had but now I 'll just trow it back with the rest. |

I think one of the most important part of this rebuilt is not measurable in money or physical substance. It's about knowledge, research and friendship relations. i am sure that vw38 parts are scarce and spread throughout Europe, but without an eye to see them, to know for sure what was their original destination, those are just "beetle parts" and can end up on the wrong car or just tossed away.
i am so glad that each genuine part adds percents to the car's correctness.
go! go! go! team from HO! |

Yesterday I met a guy in Wolfsburg Area who was the Son of an old VW mechanic. If you believe it or not even there we F
found original stuff maching parts for the 38 project. Christian is actually on the way back to Hessisch Oldendorf and will inform you in the next hours... Sometimes you just have to be at the right Moment on the right place - with the right smell for vintage stuff in your nose ;-)

You guys amaze me!
Not trying to nit pick, but about that seat... shouldn't it have the rear bar across the top of the backrest? And I would expect old seats to have wing nuts to secure them to the floor? Just trying to educate myself more than anything, thanks! |

I think the bar was dropped somewhere along the line. I have seen pictures of both seat designs on the vw38s. The seat design change may coinside with the time when door handles, hood & decklid corners changed. I think the Nr.6 should have the bar across the backrests, but if this seat comes out of a later VW38, it is damn close enough in my books. This tuff is getting more amazing by the day!!! |
