I check this topic every now and then. If I had such rare parts, I would probably be reading this topic too, back to back. And who in this Earth isn't willing to be part of the history of this car? :D

There are (and will always be) some vocal nitpickers on the net, but there's probably much more people willing to help that aren't as vocal, but who can point to someone who know someone who has a weird wheel, an unusual shaped knob, an ancient speedometer...

The rarest auto part I own is a Fiat Palio's original mirror case, and that's because someone just knocked it out of the rest of my Fiat Palio. But If I had something more thirtyeighty, sure as hell I would want it on this car.

Congrats on the new find, and what else do yoy have on your sleeve?

This is really an amazing find.

I noticed that the right head looks to be later. It has the stanchions for the spring bail for holding on the valve cover even though this engine has the bolt on valve covers. The left head does not so it is original to the engine.

What a story!!!

I received my copy of "Oldtimer-Markt" last week -since then I was fascinated of this 38-Story.

After reading all of the 200 pages here - I am Beetle-fan and thinking about having one for myself. 8)

Thanks to the restauration-team for that great story.

I’ve been watching this thread off and on for months, and just re-read the whole 200 pages this weekend.

There’s not much that I can say that hasn’t already been said: amazing, inspiring, incredible story coupled with equally astounding, amazing, awe-inspiring and important work.

A question was asked somewhere along the way, and I don’t believe it was answered. Does anyone have a record or list of where all of the early prototypes ended up? I know we know of three, but what happened to the other first cars? Has anyone researched it? Is there a list of the ones destroyed and the ones with whereabouts unknown?

I guess the big question is: Will there be another car like this found rotting in a barn somewhere?

I’d love to see a complete listing of them all and where they ended up.

Hello Björn !

I seen in the gallery many nice pictures about motor E60 and VW39 brake.
Maybe it's not the good post to talk about that but can-you tell us more about these sensasional finds ?

And please, excuse-me for my bad english... I'm french !

Regards.

Wow...200 pages.
I just found this thread last week and have been glued to it every extra moment I could find.
I am absolutely blown away by the amazing work and rich history in this thread.
Truly inspirational!

As previously mentioned by Bjoern, car #38/16 is beautifully featured in this 1939 promotional film. The engine from this car - 38/16 is now safely in the Grundmann garage.

And here 73 years later, it's getting ready to be installed in the last of 3 known VW38's! I find it crazy how things like this work out. Who would have through that the very engine from the promotional video is getting ready to have it's second chance in the 21st century? Hell, who would have thought that this would have been Nr.6's fate? I wish old cars could talk...

Nice video. At 3.00 minutes you see at the front hood clear the L-handle. Car nr 16 is sure more like the later production model as car 6.

It's still got the twist handles on the doors, though.
