Plans?
:) A friend of mine bought it last year from the first owner.
It is really beautifull and it is in very good hands. When the weather is good he took it sometimes out for a ride, otherwise it stays in a nice garage with some other old & beautifull beetles.
What could be better for a beetle at this age? :)

here's a preview of what the link is about... all original first paint 1956oval vert and some very few km on the odometer... ;)

I'm sorry, but that's not all original first paint....

eurodub Thu Oct 22, 2009 12:54 pm

ok wiggy you are right. it was restored in 82-83...

now tell us mortals how did you figured it out?

Wiggy Thu Oct 22, 2009 12:56 pm

I'm not going to beat up on the car. Its a nice car.

The rear apron is wrong. Took me 2 seconds to figure it out.

Still a nice car.

eurodub Thu Oct 22, 2009 12:59 pm

it was obvious.. i'm getting rusty
well it survived nicely, and even if now i'm positive it may have some wrong items... i agree this is just another beautiful oval vert.

I'm sure if you popped open that front hood, I'd find alot more reasons to know its not OG.

I love Iris Blue

Hello everybody, I might join in.
My name is Guenter and I dragged this 56 out of the Austrian woods 2 weeks ago. the convertibles are pretty rare here so this is gonna be restored anyways. I would like to ask if anybody can specify the color code. It's a medium brown/gold metallic hue.( please no comments on the beautiful body resprays.... )
shetland gray or sepia silver ?
Thanx anyways.

Welcome to the thread!! Damn  you got some work to do!But I dont want to discourage bro its awsome to cruise a ovaldash vert :D But finding a chassi top frame and all the latches , mirror back window new window frames. I mean all that stuff is gonna be a challenge bro forget the metal work which is hard on a vert when you gotta do heater channels! I dont know whats the plan for the car? Oh I think its Sepia silver just a guess. Cool pics keepem coming on any progress its cool to see these things come together!

Great find!!

Well done for taking it on - it will be a massive project but I admire you for it.

As for colour, I'm not sure - are you thinking the colour inside the front trunk is the original one? Do you still have the chassis number? A birth certificate may give you the colour as it left the factory. It was also normally written in crayon on the rear panel that is hidden by the roof when it is folded back - it looks a bit exposed, but maybe some careful cleaning could reveal it?

As for parts, unfortunately Tim has decided to part out his car so some of the hard to find parts are available here:

Good luck, asns as Mike says, keep us posted :)

Cheers,

Dave

Thanx for the condolence..
This resto isn't in a hurry....it will take years of collecting parts, but most stunning to me, they show up now and then. got some leads to rare parts already, and i got the glass too.

look at the great condition of the rear window +frame and still usable rubber molding. The farmer removed it when he tossed it in the ditch 35 years ago, some history is known to that car !! It was stopped by engine trouble. What a shame, it must have been in pristine body condition then. Except for a front panel accident replacement I couldn't find a single patch panel on the whole car.... :( :x

I managed to learn at least the first 5 digits from the ultra rusty ID tag, making it a Jan. 56 (proving on the 1955 stamped front axle and brakes) but unfortunately the second last digit could be anything from 0 to 9 so a birth certificate isn't an option.
everything inside the cab including the front luggage compartment is og paint ! I understand the color is hard to tell from the pics.

This thread is great info on oval Karmanns, keep it goin please. I will come back with my efforts. I have an equally wicked 54 panel bus to be done so let's see which one's first...

I'd agree on the colour - one of those two.

Shetland Grey looks a good match but a little less pink than in your photo - maybe it's the light?:

Is it still on the original chassis or has that gone? Any more history you can share with us please?

Thanx for the link, No it's not that shade of a grey, it's really a brownish golden color, quite true to my pics.the rear panel has been exposed too long, so no crayon to be found anymore. The car still has the original chassis and except for the pans its not bad, still solid centermember. although it was burried in leaves and dirt about10" deep, all the front axle trailing arms move freely, also steering gear, shocks aso. Not that it would be a problem to replace those items but still stunning after that long time. Unfortunately the chassis nr is surface rusted away also, the only part of the chassis not covered with insulation mats, so the first place to rust...
The car was driven to the place in the early 70s by pipeline engineers ( at that time the central European oil pipeline was buildt) when the engine stopped, they left it at the farm to be picked up the following weekend, they never returned... tossed in the ditch 2yrs later, ripped by several parts hunters and refused by a number of serious collectors over the last decade ( when bringing back old Vdubs from the grave was introduced to the public by the barndoor crowd and ratlookers),there are quite a few body parts as hoods and the missing drivers door reported to
be spread around in the wood, maybe to be recovered in the future, like the mushrooms growing in that same wood... dunno, it somehow found me... now it's my spell... ....and yes oval verts ARE beautiful !!!!!!

ps the cab originally should have been removed and crushed this fall after this long years when only the farmers son(friend of mine) aproached me with the hint :' since I know that you're interested in those old Vdubs befor we dump that are you interested ? just an old bug without a top...' Imagine my face when I first checked the dashboard....

Great story, and what a find!

Could it be light bronze - not a vert colour, but maybe it was a special order:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3...mp;start=0

or Ultramaroon?

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=78795

Good luck finding the other parts - do you have a metal detector? You never know what you might find :)

Keep us posted.

Dave

djfordmanjack Mon Oct 26, 2009 7:42 am

Hey Dave !
The light bronze seems to be too greenish a color.

I never thought about it but yes indeed could be an ultramaroon special order ?!? I'm going to work on an ultramaroon 55 sedan for a friend this fall, so I can compare then !

a metal detector in that part of the wood is not a good idea, I tell you, it wouldn't stop ringing   Unfortunately not all rare VW parts, but stoves, laundry machines, agricaltural equipment, you name it... :D

Another option is Dolomite:

http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/Colors/54151l279.htm

Early vert colours are realy hard to find documentation about. My December 55 car looks to have been Inca Red initially but no colours are available for 151/152 in 56/57 on TheSamba.

If anyone has colors to add to the site, preferably from an official VW source, please email to me and I will add them.

I got the color and interior info for the 1956 model year as a photo copy with my birth cert. It took me a while before noticing it was behind the certificate

...Has anyone else got those for different years?

I have a VW of Canada book at home with all of it..I think from 60 and earlier...but for sure for all the mid year early 50's verts..(not at home to look at the moment)

bally Tue Oct 27, 2009 1:16 am

That's superb Izzy. Thanks. What it doesn't tell me though is what colour my seat frames, steering column, hand brake, switches, steering wheel should be. THey look to maybe be Stone Beige, but I'd like to get it right with some authentication by documentation.

Does anyone have these details anywhere please?

Cheers,

Dave
