 thought id add a few pics of setup!! ... moved the lower back heims back so i can gusset them to the frame.. spindles mounted up on jig at the 6* rake the front end is set ride hieght..
top arms! one more bar across the back...

gotta build lower shock mount brackets on arms.. then figure out shock angles, then shock length and top shock mount spots... then i need to tube it all to the frame and roll cage.. any ideas on how much shock angles change actual shock lengths.. or ideas for front end tubing to tie it all together?

lower arms with gussets and shock mount base..

Nice!!! 8)

I like the tight fit of everything, good job!

ok heres what i come up with on shock mounts on the a arm front end.. there is no way i can get the shock 90* to the lower arm at full compression..
here is about the only thing i think will work for aarm clearance and shock length..

ill be running 14" sway away coil over 2.5 remote res. shock
21.5" at max compressed / 35.5" max extended

mine set at 20" of travel at the shock mounts marked, i can clear everthing and stay under the hood!!
suspension @ max drop 33.5 shock / 23 @ max bump..
threw 20 inches of travel ill be using the complete travel of the shock!

picture is at full bump, let me know if you see anything... im gonna start building upper supports and upper shock mounts tomorrow!

Thats not too bad, it will be fairly progressive on the damping working your by-pass a little less hard. Might be a little harder to tune in the mid-stroke though.

northstarbeetle Sat Jan 07, 2012 6:35 pm

support bars and shock mounts will be built below cross bar everthing will be gusseted and tied in to the a arm frames and square frame.. hopefull enough room for a good size gas tank up there!!

northstarbeetle Tue Jan 10, 2012 7:50 pm

got the body off. .looks kind crazy!!
ill be doing a final weld on the 1st run of the frame ..then ill be making all the gusseting and support bars after that!! picked up a small plasma cutter to cut all my steel plating.. next i wil need a nice press and dimple die set!!

Not much VW left of that thing. Maybe start a biuld page on GD or Race Dezert. I think youll get more feedback on your kind of biuld from those cats.
Lookin sweet. Almost a roller.

northstarbeetle Thu Feb 09, 2012 8:42 pm

update !! first phase of welding done!! body back on .. seats mounted .. finish gusseting some of the rear, i had to cut the tire mount out gonna have to put the tank back there!!! no room on the front end and i dont want to sacafice support bars and gusseting on the front end!
working on mounting rack and steering this week!

 got my dimple dies and built a die press!

How are you going to deal w/ the heat that engine produces?... Had my wife in an STS for a while, and when you opened the hood, the engine heat would practically give you a sunburn. . Just wondering what your plan/forethought is on this?

northstarbeetle Sat Feb 11, 2012 3:40 pm

there will be a fire wall behind the seats.. 2 sided sheet metal stuffed with fireproof foam.. there will also be a heat shield over the top of the motor to protect the fuel cell! i will also have the radiator fans in the rear window.. along with everything being open windows and rear cage will be wide open, not like under the hood of a car... im hopeing it will be fine! u can see the wall will actually come over the front of the motor for extra protection!!

I did get the rack mounted!!

I made dropped hiem spreader to get heims to be where i needed them!
