LOL. Thanks!! That means a lot.
I've got file after file and files within files of everything from Socallook cars to Bajas, Restos and almost as much non-VW stuff. I save anything that remotely turns me on.
When I started this thread, I wondered who would save pics of my car and thought that that would be the ultimate compliment.
If it makes you feel any better, if given the chance, I'd take my sawzall to your car with the zeal Jack the Ripper used when slicing hookers. |

I do remember. I'd like to see the '67.

Not the best picture but you get the idea, same set up as yours on the wheels, 18x7 with short axels, and 17x7 up front with narrowed beam but just 1.5" per side.
I got another picture of a 58 rag same wheel set up, but I need to re-size that picture. |

The car is looking good, chickendick! Do the rear tires rub on the fender lips? They look super close. And do the fronts rub when you turn? It doesn't look to have as much tuck as some VWs I've had that rubbed up front.
I really do dig the wheels. The grey looks perfect with the pale yellow paint on the body. Are you thinking of buffing out the OG paint when it warms up a little bit? |

Here is the other pictures of the 58 rag, both cars now are solded but back then when I saw your wheel set up I said damn those wheels looks sweet on a bug....I need to get a set........now I got a 61 DDoor panel and I was thinking to tuck the new C5 18x5 up in front and 18x7 out back...
Any way....can't wait to see the vert rolling.....thanks for your input.

Yeah, I'll buff it up as best as I can. It came with a shitty Mexican later model decklid as the original must've been fuckered up at one point. It wasn't easy finding the one-year-only decklid, but I got one...it's red :(
Before I did the machine work on the hub and built the caliper brackets, one rear tire rubbed enough to squeak on one side of the car and the other one was resting against the fender. They are 1/4" farther in from that point now, so they got plenty of room.
The front is going to take some playing with. The Passenger's wheel is leaning way out at the top. Since the top B/J is the only way to adjust it, it should come in 1/2" or so to match the bottom when the alignment is done. The other side is more vertical and looks more like it fits. The front tires sit right in the void between the outer fender lip and the bulge in the inner fenderwell that results from the trunk being expanded on later cars. I think I can drive it fine at the height in the picture, but it's going to rub on that inner hump when I turn into a driveway and the wheel get's pushed up. Theoretically, out on the road, a right hand corner would put the right wheel in danger of hitting on the inside, except that the car would be lifting on that side and diving on the opposite side.
Like I said, I'm going to have to play with it a little.
Here's a pic of the driver's side.

Love tbe work!. Very sweet lookin ride!
I am contemplating the IRS setup I too will have to narrow the arms
I have a 64 with short axles. And the other week test fitted my 16 x7 fuchs
(fat 205/55/16 Conti) and 944 hubs. They just fit. And I mean just, thanks to the camber. I am thinking IRS because I would like to install a 914/901 trans

| Nice looking combo! You can actually buy narrowed trail arms at www.blindchickenracing.com (no relation). You can also do it that way I did or go to http://www.germanlook.net/html/content/contentsearch.php?category=tech and see how they did it. |

Picked up a nice dry 61 vert from a good friend in AZ. Trucked 1300 miles home flat towing it. Beautiful clips, channels and support rails. Fun trip and I'm completely enamored with the car. The yellow one gets roadworthy before this one gets a wrench turned on it though. That's the deal I made with myself.
Nothing but surface rust.
Pans are new, but look at those support rails!!
This a-hole rode my ass for two days. Love the little vert sticker my boss got me from Hawaii and the real vert in tow.

LOL. My best friend asked me why I need two, so I asked him why he needed two 4-wheelers (he recently bought a new one solely because his neighbor bought a new one). He said "I got one to trash on and one to keep nice". I said "exactly...". |

Missed this post. The 61? Just restore it....NOTHING CRAZY.
Been out enjoying the '70 today. I'll post some pics later. Had the alignment done today which pulled the wheels forward enough to just squeak and get hot against the fender. After all of that work, I still had to run an axe handle around the fenderwell opening...
Met a couple of nice folks at the Chevron station today. They are in the process of restoring a '74. A man and his son. They were in the middle of welding a rear clip on it. They pulled in just to talk to me about the car. Apparently, the son has been reading this thread! His dad said, "you didn't know you were famous, did you?"
Well, actually...LOL
If your still reading this thread, post up! (so everybody will know I'm not lying). Plus, I'd like to follow up on your progress. |
