Thanks for the info VDubTech. It's always nice to know the right names for things. Now on the heat exchanger I have another question. It doesn't have a pipe coming out of the rear which would hook into the fan mounted above the engine. How does the heat get pushed to the front of my bus?

Also, would it be worthwhile to get the FI system up to spec or would the dual carb setup be a better option? I have the dual carbs already, but have heard nightmare stories about them as well as the FI.

You can't do any better for a stock system than the factory FI. I would take an FI Bus over anything else any day of the week. You're missing a few parts to hook the heat up to the Bus, there is a pipe off of the heat exchanger that connects to a flapper box to turn it on and off that connects to an accordian tube that connects to a Y pipe over the axle that connects to the centrtal heat duct that runs to the front of the Bus. There's a diagram around here somewhere, lemme see if I can find it.

Here ya go, disrgard the part of the left side of this pic and the blower under the Bus, only Buses equipped with BA6 gas heaters have those parts. Everything else you will need to have heat in the Bus.

I'm running dual carbs right now and love the way they feel and sound, and so far have been very reliable, but I will never be a master at tuning carbs and want to go on road trips without having to worry about that, especially going back down to sea level. I'll be switching over to fuel injection within a few months, probably before summer.

What I've heard from all my friends running fuel injection is that it can be a process to set it up at first, but afterward it's great. They seem to be very happy with their setups and have no desire to run carbs.

I wonder if mileage is also better with fuel injection. When I was running a Type 1 motor with a single carb, I was getting around 210-220 miles out of a tank before hitting the reserve. Now I am lucky to even get close to 200.

Ok, so I have spent some time looking around the forum and got some advice on how to proceed with my engine and have decided that dual carbs is the easiest way to go right now. I know, I know, FI is the better choice and I do plan on installing it later on down the road, possibly on the second engine I am rebuilding. Mostly I just want to get my bus on the road so I can enjoy it. I have been working on it for nearly a year and I don't know how much longer I can take it sitting in my garage collecting dust. And since I already have the carbs, H40/44 EIS (from the forums I think they are referred to as Kadrons), I figure this is my best bet. The mods I will have to do for the FI to work properly will have to wait.

So that leads me to my next step. The flywheel/clutch/pressure plate the engine came with is 228mm and the one I have is a 210mm. From what I have determined I can't use the 228mm with my tranny which I believe is a 091. At least that is what is on the back of my original flywheel. I have read however that you can install a different bellhousing to use the 228mm and although it does look a lot beefier, I have read that the 210mm will suffice for my bus.

So if anyone is looking for the 228mm flywheel/clutch/pressure plate and starter make me an offer. They look in great shape and the clutch plate looks fairly new.

Also, thanks again to SGKent who directed me to the final part I need to get this bus back together.

Can I just leave the CHT Sensor in place and zip tie the wire out of the way since I am using carbs for the time being, or do I need to use a plug?

Merry Christmas all.

Tomorrow is the day to do some serious work on my bus. I just received my release bearing guide sleeve from busdepot on Thursday so the last piece of the puzzle keeping my engine from being installed is here. Christmas was good and netted me a new battery, gallon of oil and oil filter, gallon of purple power, quart of polyurethane (to finish my interior panels), butt connectors to re-splice some wires, couple rattle cans of flat black to respray the seat anchor hardware and a gallon of tranny oil so I have everything I need to get her going.

Everything is set to rock and roll in the morning. New coffee pot from the wife (thankyouthankyouthankyou) will get me jacked up on caffeine and I will go to town. Wish me luck and sooner than later I will finally be on the road, not done with the work I want to do, but street legal and safe while the rest is being worked on. \:D/

Its looking awesome, I can't believe you stitched those covers by hand...they look nice and straight. You're insane! I really like your curtain fabric too.

Hoooraaayyyyy. It's ALIVE!

I spent the last 2 weekends getting my engine ready and installed. It was a time consuming process, since it was my first time, but after checking and double checking everything, and then checking again I was ready to try and start it up. It was turning over but wouldn't engage. It wasn't getting any fuel so I spent this evening rebuilding the carbs. I put them in and cranked that baby and it fired up. Now it's not perfect, detonation in the left carb, but damnit, it's running \:D/ =D> \:D/

Now it's time to learn how to tune a set of Kadrons and get this baby on the road.

Hey, Where'd you get those rubber mats?

Came with the bus of course. Standard issue as far as I know. You can find them in the classifieds all the time for reasonable prices.

Congrats everything has looked great. Let's see some updated picks with engine in.

Engine is going good so far. Got a question about some wires taken care of and although it didn't take care of my dash light for the alternator staying on, at least I have learned a little more. Brain has stopped it's meltdown for now.

I did my first valve adjustment yesterday, 3 hours later I had it all figured out. I had to keep checking and rechecking and rechecking. TDC is now marked thank god. That was most of my issue starting out.

I got new motor mount for the mustache bar today and got them installed today. Although I had read here that you can do this with the engine in, I would not reccomend it to my worst enemy. It took about 4 hours and busted knuckles. But it's done. Swapped the SVDA out for a mechanical (didn't want to tap the carbs for the vaccum hose) and got it mostly put back together. Played with the timing a bit today, static, but still don't understand enough for my liking.

Tomorrow will bring new plugs, points, gaskets for the manifold to head and exhaust. Having a friend come over for some timing help and carb tuning and then maybe I will finally be able to drive it around the block. Then some new pics.

It is driveable now. Took it for her first spin today and other than running out of gas  , it was awesome. All the hard work and busted knuckles has paid off. Still a bit away from getting her registered, but it was a good feeling taking her for a cruise. Here are some pics. I know that the fuel filter should be out of the engine bay and it will get moved, it's the next on my list to get done. Any suggestion on where? I was thinking just on the other side of the firewall. I already have one filter before the electric fuel pump, would it be ok to put the other one right after?

Now onto the brakes, clutch adjustment, more carb adjustment and electrical. Can't wait

My Fuel filter is under my bus... But it's a Type 1 engine... there may be a difference

maximan1 Sun Jan 10, 2010 11:24 pm

No difference Rex. I had all original fuel lines on my bus when I got it, the stock spot is beneath the belly of the beast. Before the fuel pump.
