Saying that I don't have it taken apart, help would be great! And if I can have it done or close to, then I could have to take a look at it..In a little while Invisible Stuff is coming up and we're going to get the gland nut off and I'll split the case..and see whats really wrong :?

so, wait, you never took the rods off the crank?

PatterBon Sat Nov 14, 2009 6:15 pm

I did remove the rods from the crank, but the bearings didnt seem bad so i put them back onwith out a second thought..and now im paying for it.. :x

Yep, I did that once a long time ago. Guess what happened?

Learned my lesson: ANY time you pull the rods on a motor with more than a few thousand miles, you're gonna need to at least measure and closely inspect the journals (re-polish most of the time), and replace the bearings. Same for the mains.

I'm hoping that I caught it early enough so all I have to do is repolish the rod journals..we'll see..didnt get to removing the gland nut today..to much going on.. :(

Hey guys, quick update..Tomorrow I'm borrowing a flywheel lock and another tool to get the gland nut off..It's been raining really hard and with school I haven't been able to get the time to split the case, but tomorrow I'll have pictures up hopefully in the 4-5 o'clock hour.

the suspense is killing me...

Anxious to see what you find . . .

mateo710 Tue Nov 17, 2009 5:06 pm

any recent pics in here?...

johnnypan Thu Nov 19, 2009 6:46 am

Put on your big girl panties and get back to work.

PatterBon Thu Nov 19, 2009 9:19 am

I'm on it, and now I have a "helping hand" a Torque Meister and a Flywheel lock...I got those yesterday so work will commence this afternoon :D

theredbarn Thu Nov 19, 2009 10:46 am

I happen to know that you got those tools yeaterday afternoon... What are you waitin for? :P

I hope the crank checks out, but if not a DPR counterweight is only around $175. A set of reconditioned and ballanced rods from DPR runs $95. Localy an align bore and deck surfacing the case will hit you around $150. Add a 12 lb flywheel, a 30mm oil pump and full flow the case and you'll have a really strong shortblock to work with.

You know where to find me when you run into the unexpected...

PatterBon Thu Nov 19, 2009 9:28 pm

Braving the cold, rain, and dirt..I got her apart :D  ..Thanks for the tools Mr. W! They made getting that gland nut off a million times easier!..So here is what I found..:

#4 Rod

#4 Rod

#4..again..looks like it took the worst of it.

The orange wasn't rust, it came off with me running my finger over it.

#3..the one that was knocking..no real bad damage other than just a worn bearing

(All the journal pictures are of the journals both front and back)

Now here's #4's journal..the bottom half..its pretty scratched, but that's the only section of the crank that is..

And so there you have it..all the bearing were pretty worn..but there was no significant damage done..and everything "looks" to be ok..no metal shards in the crankcase which gave me hope..I think I caught it early enough.... [-o< [-o<

69bugboy76 Thu Nov 19, 2009 9:34 pm

I'd be a little nervous about that #4 journal...

gerg Thu Nov 19, 2009 11:56 pm

Can you feel the scratches on the journal or just see them?

May be able to polish . . . hopefully, but it doesn't look that way from here.

I am surprised to see that much bearing in place for #3 if it was moving that much. Were the rod nuts loose? Does it look out of round when you put the two halves together?

fastinradford Fri Nov 20, 2009 12:43 am

Please put a counter-weight crank in it...

johnnypan Fri Nov 20, 2009 6:21 am

go borrow a micrometer and measure out the crank my bet is a cut crank with standard bearings. no way 3 and 4 rods hammered that loose and have that much overlay still on them....something fishy here...

theredbarn Fri Nov 20, 2009 3:22 pm

You're welcome on the tools... that torque master is a treat to use.

There's no way I'd use that crank without having it ground. Save your pennies up, write a letter to Santa and get a CW crank and rods like I suggested. You've done the cheap and dirty, now it's time to do it right.
