Why?

Because it's easier to look good not caring about actual performance, than it is to do things right and maybe take a hit to your pride because your engine doesn't look as good as it could. You can always tell where the VW community's priorities lie, just follow the chrome at any show.

In defense of chrome alternator pulleys:

I have found that even the cheapest chrome pulley works just fine when it is installed correctly with the right number of shims. I've never seen one break under those circumstances.

I still prefer stock ones.

I've seen chrome pulleys rub against the alternator housing.

I've seen a chrome alternator pulley slice through a guys wrist while setting timing on a bug when the damn thing came apart!

And I've won a track championship racing my street legal Dunebuggy with dual chrome exhaust.

I tried one out on my Baja this morning so I could see if the vacuum advance was working on my Aircooled.net distributor.

I put the cap on and the car would not start. I put the Bosch one back on and it started.

I tried the clear one again and it started. I'm not sure what happened with the first try. It's an EMPI cap, so that might explain the problem.

Anyway, it looks like the vacuum unit is just barely moving. Now I need to figure out what is wrong.

I figure i will put my 2 cents in
i have a clear dis. cap and ran it. it ran ok for a while until the contact posts got dirty cleaned them up and it ran great. there's nothing bad about them its just there not as tough as oem caps. just keep fuel away from it and it will be ok, just keep your old cap in your car just incase you never know.
