I work at an independent used car company that specializes in mostly Audi/VW products. A few weeks ago our parts driver from Checker Auto Parts stopped by and mentioned his dad had an old Porsche that he wanted to get rid of. We got to talking and I asked if I could come over and take a look at it.
I found it sitting in his back yard in this condition.
Apparently he bought it a number of years ago, I don't know when it originally came to AZ, but according to the plate it has been in AZ since about 1986. The previous owners wife had a bunch of bags of clothes on the seats and other stuff all over the interior so the interior is immaculate. The dash isn't cracked, the headliner looks like it was installed yesterday. So after looking at it in the above condition, I decided to pick it up.
I came back with a truck and trailer, he was nice enough to air up the tires, and put the spare on in place of the one that wouldn't hold air. I hooked it up on the trailer, Paid the man $1,500, and was on my way.
Since taking possession of it, I've checked all the numbers and turns out this car is 100% original, the vin #'s all match, the original paint is "Slate Gray, My car was built by Karmann in West Germany and it was the 348th 912 built by Karmann in 1966. The engine and transmission are original and matching. It's a 1586cc 100hp, motor, with a 5 speed transmission.
Here are the pics when I picked up the car.
I couldn't stand it being dirty for even one more minute, so I took it through a drive through do it yourself wash and sprayed it off. Good news, it doesn't leak.
Check it out, Box A original mile title.
and check this out. First registered in July of 66, and with a list price of $4,690. Ahhh... to buy one back then.

time for an update guys....
I started the body work. I've ground down all the old paint and found surprisingly little rust.
here's some more pics. Some close up of the bare metal, and a couple of the motor.
I've got two of these carbs
Real Italian Webers.
Here's the motor, I've done literally nothing with it since pulling it out of my car.
This area is right above the taillight on the passenger side. I'ts gonna need a little metal work
I bet you guys back East would like to have rocker panels this clean.
A little spot of rust right behind the front wheel
this is gonna need a little metal work too.
and the headlight buckets.

When I first saw the pics I thought "that car could have all kinds of crud hiding out under that paint" but it looks like you got really lucky. Keep us posted on how it works out.
I especially like this keychain. My brother has one just like it for his 914

Update time I guess. I was updating my other thread in the car lounge more faithfully. So this is kinda just a jump ahead a long ways post, but here's the latest.
It's painted. I've started putting it back together. For now I'm just re-using all my old trim and plastic lenses etc. I took some steel wool to the trim and made it look tons better, but still not perfect. After I just want to get it back together and I'll start looking for new lenses, rubber, trim, etc. I did have two brand new repro rear bumper trim pieces but they're too short. I can't stand repro stuff. It never fits quite right. I may just pull my old original stuff off and have it re-finished and put it back on. We'll see after I do some research on the interwebz and see what other 912/911 guys have found with different reproduction parts companies.
Here's the pictorial update though.
I know I had taken some pictures mid paint/body work process. For the life of me I can't figure out what I did with them though.
But here's what it looked like when I first brought it home from paint.
These are from this afternoon after replacing most of the interior and most of the outer trim and lights. Obviously it's not finished yet. I don't have the rubber inserts in the trim on the front and rear bumpers. I only have one of four over-riders installed. The taillights aren't screwed in yet. Etc.... Also, I don't know how I did it. but somehow I have a dent in the hood already. It looks like I shut it on something since it's an outward facing dent. I swear that I don't remember doing this. Maybe one of my stupid roommates was messing with it. Either way though. I looks ugly and I'll have to do some PDR work to get it to smooth back out as much as possible. Also, the motor isn't back in it yet..... But I'm sure you can see that from the pictures. The interior needs some work. There's some obvious sun damage, however, it's not bad seeing as it's a 45 year old car.
