I have been looking at the 8000 series white face gauges at the local Orielly auto parts store and they look really cool and are very reasonably priced. They have electric and mechaincal for the oil pressure, but I'm not sure about the speedometer fitment. I'm not worried about the opening size because its going in a custom dash, I can't seem to find an answer about the original VW speedo ratio. Equus website has this: IMPORTANT: The speedometer is designed
for a 1:1 drive ratio (60 mph or
96,5 km/h at 1000 RPM) using a 5/8"-18
cable thread shaft. This shaft requires a
0.104” (2,64 mm) square female cable
drive. If the vehicle’s tire size or differential
ARE NOT stock (original), speedometer
accuracy will be affected. It may be
necessary to change to a different pinion
gear to achieve the required 60 MPH at
1,000 RPM.
So if anybody has experience with these speedos and the calibration it would be helpful. Thanks in advance. |

| Is your speedo working accurately and how well did it hook up with the cable? |

Think these speedo (by quoted installation notes) are designed to drive of transmission tail shaft of standard auto concept, not off left front wheel as VW chose to do it.... Check to see if they have a ELECTRONIC version instead of mechanical version, with proper "hall effect" sensor any "drive" scenario should be be easy to program for...
VDO and many others have electronic versions, so it may be the the brand you are looking at may also... Also look to see if you can find the "manufacturer" site on internet, the may have a lot more options than local OTC parts store...
GOOGLE found this site...

| i did the math and my tires are 10% off of 1000-60 so im always going 10% faster. I think they make gear boxes to do it for you as in if your 20% persent off you'll have a box with 2 small gear one 20% bigger than the other. |

Like dale said , my VDO speedo can be calibrated to any tire size, which is really cool cause you get accurate speed and mileage..
Have to say though that my VDO speedo after only 12Kmiles is acting strange in that the digital mileage display is intermittent and blinking weird stuff ,although the total mileage when it appears is still correct. Next time i'm going with a different brand cause my other vdo gauges have had issues too. |

If all are behaving oddly it could be power/wiring issues...
