| my 77 tin top has a 5 rib tranny, shifts into reverse fine, and will go backwards if i barely lift the clutch, but if i ease on off the clutch, it pops out and grinds real nasty like. Linkage problem? reverse gone? what? |

How much free play do you have in the clutch pedal?
You may be about to break the clutch cable. Make sure you have a new one handy. |

the plate under the shifter may be broken and interfering with the shift
the ball on the hockey stick in the transmission may be worn out
the shift coupler may be loose
someone may have played with the shifter and not re-aligned it correctly |

the clutch pedal will not stand up no matter how much i tighten or loosen the cable, the shift fork will not return all the way, is the diaphram weak?

the pedal rests about half way up and has no freeplay and wuill slip under load. WHATs GOIN ON!! |

You need to change out the clutch cable.

Could be.....you have no free play in the clutch.
While you are under there replacing it, inspect the bowden tube to make sure it has the correct bend to it. I have seen the front weld break before.
Let see if that works before you have to go deeper. |

Turns out it was the bushings in the clutch pedal. I got it freed up. O yeah and new clutch cable too. |

| If After doing all that and it dosn't work then pull the trany and have it rebuilt. vw aircooled tranys have a very weak rev gear. I replace them all the time. Thay always get a new one put it on my rebuilds. just think the same rev gear as the bug has and double the weight on it. |
