Anybody know about Scott Moore, the Laguna Beach based artist?
This used to be his bus.
Me and my dad took the door home today...just stuck it on the roof rack and drove down here. I tied the seats down so they wouldn't fall out or anything when its getting towed tomorrow.
Real quick, how hard is it to pass California smog with this? |

It appears you have all of the fuel injection equipment intact. That is required to even think of passing in CA.
In CA, the seller is normally required to have it smogged upon sale. Here is what DMV says:
When a car is sold, who is responsible for the inspection?
The seller is required to provide the buyer with a valid smog inspection certification at the time of the sale or transfer. Smog certifications are good for 90 days from the date of issuance.
The inspection is not required on a transfer if a biennial smog certification was submitted to DMV within 90 days prior to the vehicle transfer date (a vehicle inspection report may be required for proof of certification).
Your bus last passed smog in 2005 and passed every test except for one in 1997. For that one, they must have made some minor adjustments to the mixture and it passed 31 minutes later.
Here is a summary of the results:
Number of Tests Found = 6

| Required? I think I'll just have to smog it myself. |

Well I am really excited to start working on it. I am just concentrating on getting the engine running and going, then during the next school year it will be my project in my high school auto body class.
The back engine cover had some nasty paint and stuff on it, so I sanded it down and I am going to repaint it.
Also, my rear hatch window seal pretty much cracked into pieces. I found one for $24.99 online, but I was wondering if there was any one cheaper since I am on a tight budget. |

25 bucks seems about right...Whats with the duck tape around the bus? Is that holding the sliding door in or something?
How old are you? jw because i am a teenage bus driver too :) |

I found one for $22...do you need to cut it when you remove?
I am 16 years old. Do you live in the SoCal area? We could round up all the teen VW drivers and have a cruise or something.
Edit: Awww nevermind I see you live in a different state.
Oh well. Hit me up if you ever come through these parts.
Edit 2: The duct tape was because the rear hatch window was only sealed on the bottom half and we couldn't have it fly out on the freeway. But the seal broke anyway while it was being towed, hence why I need a new rear hatch window seal. |

| When I buy a new seal, how do I put it in? I've been lurking here for a while but I don't think theres a tutorial. I will search, but I would appreciate any help I can get. |

| Umm about the smog. Does the seller have to provide the current smog even if the vehicle had been sitting on non - operational registration for a few years? |

Yes unless you agree otherwise. If you demand title w/o smog then the burden is on you. Check out the DMV website or visit the DMV to see the paperwork you will have to fill out.
Since you picked up the bus already, I'm assuming you accepted title w/o the smog. |

The engine cover part had a lot of surface rust, sanded through and painted with house paint in places, and had, like, a gallon of ice cream spilled on it 3 years ago that had turned into a disgusting, semi solid mess.
Also I think someone was burning candles on it, and the other side had a bunch of wax on it.
I stripped the whole thing down to bare metal and repainted it with heat resistant paint, it looks better now.

Hey max! Welcome to thesamba. I went back and found my thread on my 1974 to give you some inspiration. Mine was not in "bad" condition for sure, but I know yours can look as good as this or better depending on the work you put into it. You just gotta ditch the horrific and clashing green above the beltline!
One thing to me, was that I refused to have it repainted as I love being able to tell people that this is the original paint--and it is. In your case, you'll need to repaint at least the top, but the bottom looks salvageable.
My thread on "kombia" is here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=303713&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 |
