(1) Sell the former; buy the latter (can be done in any order)

(2) Start hacking and fabricating (can be done as often or as little as you like, and in any order)

a beetle truck like this?

most older beetle/trucks go with the flatbed design. i guess the hardest part would be filling in the back window area.

does any one else have any more good pics like the one above?

tims.workshop Tue May 26, 2009 12:06 pm

i found it its a type 825. i want to turn my type 1 in to a type 825

pafree Tue May 26, 2009 12:39 pm

thats cool and offroady. i like how the stock rear fenders are used. just weld a frame with 1 inch square tubing and sheet it with 20 or 22 guage sheet metal. lead or bondo the seams. it almost looks like the rear of a vw van.

thanks for the pics. they will help alot but i still invite more pics

this is getting cooler, vw produced one in 1939 and 1946 and they were 4wd. the pictures i posted before were of the 46 and this is one of the 39 and model diagram. i alway thought vw/trucks were a kitcar thing.

well this really helps. i thing this will come in handy when i cut up my 68 standard for one of these

I knew some guys that did these conversions back in the 70's. They found that eventually the pan started to sag right where they cut the back part of the body off.

I think if you only cut off the top and part of the sides of the bug body you would have better results. Still need to brace it up.

tims.workshop Wed May 27, 2009 7:24 am

i only planed on cutting out down far enough to the top of the fender or the motor (which evers higher)then when i reweld on metal it should be enough support right?

rayjay Wed May 27, 2009 10:31 am

I would add some braces before I started cutting the body. A decent sized crossbrace just behind the doors and just below the side glass openings would add a lot of strength and give you a place to attach the bed floor and maybe the back section of the cab.

I would also not try to make the new cab back have a nice smooth seam where it meets the original roof. If you look at some mini trucks you will see that the rear edge of the roof sticks back about 3/8" and this creates a lip that the cab back welds to. I am pretty sure a Chevy Luv / Isuzu Pup has this design if you want to check one out.

If you do the design right you will still have access to the area of the old back seat for dry storage.

thanks for the info. now i am just wondering what is the best way to cut the body? did i hear someone say sawz-all \:D/ or is ther a better way :-k ?

rayjay Wed May 27, 2009 2:01 pm

I would use an electric shear across the roof but some areas are going to require a sawzall or ziz wheels.

I am building a VW truck, 1968 bug, ( body was on truck headed for the scrap yard ). Built frame from box tubing, 1974 suspension. 1962 aluminum block Buick V8, 195 HP. Fuel tank and battery on stand over nose of transaxle. 1940 Ford hood with radiator behind grill in old spare tire location. Will be lowered all round. I built one like this about 30 years ago except with a good running vw engine. I would send pictures if I can find out how to do it. POPS RIDE Pops

I am have a Type 825 built by Kooble Kar. Check out their web site. The price is reasonable for a pan off build. I provided them with a titled 70 bug and they did the rest.[http://www.kooblekar.com/][/url]
