View original topic: Changing Fuel Lines/filter/etc 81 air cooled vanagon???

Hey everybody! It seems like I will be changing the fuel lines for the first time on my CA 2.0 liter 1981 air cooled Vanagon. Now, I've got a couple questions. Where should I get my fuel lines and how much should I purchase?

I've looked at both of these:

http://www.van-cafe.com/home/van/page_499_1323/fuel_line_replacement_kit.html

http://www.gowesty.com/ec_view_details.php?id=4393&category_id=&category_parent_id=

However, go westy says that their kit is only for water cooled Vanagons. What would the difference be? Is the van-cafe kit also only for water cooled ones?

Basically, what should I buy, and how much of it?

Also, while I'm doing this, is there anything else I should replace. I am thinking it would probably be good to change the fuel filter...but what else would be beneficial at this point?

for the filters, I'm looking at these:

http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=133133511

http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=71028

Is bus depot the best place to buy them? are there any better alternatives?

Finally, if anyone has any suggestions or recommendations (or even pictures) for changing these, please let me know!

Thanks in advance for the help!

here's a few pictures of the existing lines underneath the car. As you can see the lines look pretty brittle. If you look at the hose at the left end of the square fuel filter you can see the hose starting to split. I don't think this is a problem yet, but it could be soon if no actions are taken.

You don't need to guess, just get cracking. Use the search and see how other folks have done air-cooleds.

Bus Depot, Van Cafe, or aircooled.net can take care of you. I don't think the differences are terribly profound, it's mostly a matter of using clamps, which Napa has, for fuel-injected systems, and the proper grade of hose.

Welcome aboard, we're very glad to have you!

Best!
