Played around with the covers today checking the fit on the engine. All fit well but I think I need to open up the hole to the next size with a 8mm bolt and 8mm hole its just alittle tight. Also centered up the holes better on the old school covers by adjusting the pattern and they look much better now then before (not off center). I`m also only polishing the edge on the bottom and the fins and like the look even better.

Just read through all 7 pages of the thread. Incredible. I really like the look of the right side one in the last post without the racer wording and more rounded look. They are nearly identical to what I have on my vintage '62 1200. Mine are 9 rib however.

I can think of a few things that would be cool to make also. You could go full time and really start something. Envious of your mad skills and ambition.

your dentist will love you !!! I was kinda thinking about you ,and wondering if you were to pour aluminum in the shape of a stock cylinder(no fins that can be cut ) with a stock or biger cylinder with about 2/3 of the fins removed. if it would squeze the cylinders down when it cooled, so big out of spec cylinders could be resized and have the added cooling of the aluminum.(like the old brial or the porche cylinders), I also almost started making some intake manifold molds, but got a deal on some tall ones I can use .sorry but my brain go 212 mph 26 hours a day, and never seems to have a pit stop. but on the good side with all this crap I have to do I will never die!!! gladd your doing ok, and still have a job.

Here my next project I just started on paper. I also upgrade my old South Bend lathe with a 4 jaw chuck to help me out with this project. Have alook its not going to be easy but I think I can handle it.

slurpintine sump?? taper the fins for better cooling so it sucks the heat away. and "O" ring the cover & bolts, no leaks. my brother has an old SB looks to be a lot older than yours. and much dirtyer(clean & reworked & re painted black & gold but about an inch of dust) I wish I had 1/4 of the lathes he has then I would have 2x as many as I do now.
keep up the great work and always keep going faster.

Heres alook at my new project a round oil sump. I just guessed at the measurement so it is what it is. As far as the porsche ones from looking at the picture it looked to be about 9" and my old south bends lathe is a 9" lathe with about 9 1/8" over the bed. I didn`t cast the fins I think it will be easyer to cut them being most of it needs machined anyway. I also made a round journal and a spur in the center hoping to chuck on later. Have alook it took almost 2 qt. of metal to pour.

After seeing your valve covers your sump should turn out very nice.
I cheated when I made my round sump, I used a peice of 10" alum round tubing and made the top plate from 1/4 plate and the bottom from 1/2 plate.

I had to make a spindle to hold the bottom plate so I could turn it on the lathe, it looks OK but Its a bit heavy. Have you thought about a mold for the sump body that the sides are in pieces so that you can take it apart after you have it in the sand so you can cast the fins with out having to turn them on the lathe. Are you going to make the internal baffle? I thought about it but I dont think I need it for what I'm doing.

Your valve covers haven't leaked a drop yet. They are going to get the salt test next. The other pair I got from you is on my oval beetle, they work great too!

Wow! I don't even know how to explain what I just read through. You have done some extremely impressive work, and without a CNC too!
I definitely want to look into making a furnace, my friend has made one and make a whole bunch of neat stuff.
