Hi all, i would like to finally start my build thread. I suppose I should have done this sooner, but ah well. I found my baja back in feb of this year and it took me 10 whole weeks to save up the $$$. But she was worth the wait, i have wanted a bug, any bug, since i was 10yrs old. I have a vid of her, it was taken a week after i got her. Since then i have ripped out all nasty carpet, rewired, and found a usable back seat. I am ready to get the new clutch and Brake kit finally. I was hoping you fine people could help me with exactly what to look for in a kit, i have shopped around and am so overwhelmed with the choices!

what do you mean by kits? are you looking at upgrading a disk package or just rebuilding the stock brakes?

pafree Wed Jun 03, 2009 10:55 pm

as far as brakes, www.socalautoparts.com has a stock brake kit that comes with M/C, shoes, mounting hardware, wheel cylinders, and rubber lines. it doesnt include drums or steel lines but for less than 20 they have a steel line kit too.

as far as the clutch, a stock clutch set up should work for street driving and light off road but if you plan on getting into the heavy stuff start shopping for a kennedy stage 1 pressure plate. there is some debate on whether to go with a clutch with springs or not. socal also sales a stock clutch kit that includes clutch, pressure plate and throwout bearing.

it might be better quality or price to shop around and piece together a set up but i have been using the kits i got from them for 6 plus years without any problems stopping or going. my 2cents.

i am looking to put disc in the front and just rebuild the back drums.
what i need to know is what else besides the kit i have to buy to do a "complete" job. like i know i will have to get bearing grease and possibly bearings. and i also have to patch some rust by the battery area, so would i be able to just put sheet metal over the whole? or could i just spot patch it? i am sorry for all the newbish ??s, but i am very new to this. lol.

so if i get the kit from socal, then all i should have to buy is the steel brake line kit? I have a clutch picked out, im not doin any off road in the near future, its basically gonna be my very fun daily driver.

thank you,
Babs

the area under the battery could be covered with sheet metal but i recommend cutting out and/or treating the rust with a rust killer treatment before you cover it up. they do make quarter halfs and replacement battery trays, they fit and look a little better than trying to mold a flat piece of sheet metal.

the socal brake kit doesnt include steel lines, brake drums, remote reservoir, or the blue reservoir supply lines. they carry disc brakes but maybe someone else can advise as far as stuff needed. i know i have seen threads asking about which bearings to use with disc brake spindles.

Ok, I thought I would update.

I got my new clutch ordered, so I am waitin on that, but in the mean time, I thought I would find out exactly what gauge wires I need for the ext regulator. So if someone could possibly tell me, that would be wonderful.

I helped my hubby remove the engine last sunday and I have to say it was alot heavier than I expected. I even have bruises, lol. But it was fun and empowering to have done that. I gonna be gettin a new exhaust soon, just gotta decide what I want. I thought about the dual cannons, but I would not mind some feedback on that. The next big thing is the brakes.

Oh yeah, I just rem. I need to know if the exhaust that says with heat are the ones that hook up to the heat risers, just curious.

PB blaster is your friend. start soaking the exhaust nuts yesterday. they might be talking about heat exchangers. if you dont plan on running heat in the car, you can use J tubes. most exhaust systems come with the heat risers attachments.

Ok, so I have my new exhaust (went with Dual Cannons) and it sound even meaner now! I am finally ready to do the brakes, did a little test and it will stop in the driveway, but I dont trust it on the road yet. How difficult are the brakes really? So are there any other parts places that I should look for kits, or is SoCal the best shot??

I am havin lots of fun, sometimes I just sit in my car and listen to it.

Welcome Babs ! :) I'm in Texas and I order a lot of stuff from Roy Rogers in Little Rock. They have good prices and free shipping for orders over $50 ,and I get my order in 2 days max.
Would you want to sell your old exaust ? I've been wanting a stinger but I'm on disablity and $$$ is hard to come by for the big items. I've also got some stuff to trade. You can email me at gonzoandde2@verizon if your interested.

i would check out cbperformance.com for the disk brakes, im not a a fan of the disk brake quality from so cal. friend of mine on a street car had an issue with the bearings not fitting there spindles andhad to make an exchange. luckily we are local and that was easy, you are not so local and wouldnt want you to have to go through any nonsense.

bugginbabs78 Fri Sep 04, 2009 6:00 am

yes I would be willing to sell my old exhaust, but I have actually contacted a vwguy locally and he is gonna do my brakes all around for a very reasonable price. i have found that my hubby and i just dont have the free time to do the brakes. other things like the wiring and such take less time. so this weekend we will finish hookin up all the wires and testin everything. then when i call my guy again it will be all ready after he gets done so we can drive it home. then i just gotta get a horn and turn signal switch. oh yeah, and go get it inspected.

wish me luck! :)

I need some help identifying some parts, I would like to know what it is and if the bushing/gasket is replaceable.

And I bought a Urethane Transmission mount kit, but I am not sure on where/how to attach it. I assume it goes in between the engine and tran.

[img][img][/img]

And could someone tell me if this is and short or long axle?

Question #1..yes..it's replaceble...click HERE

Question #2...mounts usually go between tranny and chassis (rear and nosecone)

Question #3...no idea by just looking at picture

So...my question to you...where are you in Texas??? I'm just outside of San Antonio in Converse :D

bugginbabs78 Thu Apr 08, 2010 6:48 am

ok, ty.
such a small piece.

We dont have the axle off yet, thats why I have that pic.

So my understanding with swing axles' is that if it measures 26 its short and if it measures 28 its long. Would I be correct?

Im in Lubbock. :)

Just wanted to update, I got my rear brake kit from CB and have installed it.
I went around the block, and she stops on a dime!
I have replaced the single mac with a dual one, replaced warped axle tubes with rebuilt ones, now I have to take care of some cancer spots and she will be ready to take on some puddles, lol. I'm SO excited!

My hubby drove her to work today to get it inspected! Finally!!

I don't think I could have done it without the help of all you wonderful people here on the Samba, Thank you!

Babs :) :) :) :D :D :D

sounds like it is coming together. the cancer spots are to let the water out when you hit the bigger and deeper puddles.
