Is your product rolled embossed or chemically etched? I believe they were originally rolled, making the impression ....anybody know for sure?
Thanks

Yes, I've made them on Birch plywood before, which looks great and is a reasonably close match to the original Limba plywood. I'm finishing up a restoration on an original pair of kick panels right now and will post photos of them when they are finished. They are both set on Birch plywood and will be upholstered for a barndoor deluxe.
I found another wood that is a much better match than birch.
These kick panels have original snowflake metal.
The brown rear kick panel is an unrestored original.
The rear and middle with black upholstery are restored on new wood with new upholstery.

Here are some photos of a set of kick panels I made using Ricardos trim:
The one on the top is an original.
The one on the top is a restored original.
The quality of the trim is nice, it was shipped to me in a roll, flat, with no bead along the top.
The detail of the snowflake material isn't as defined as the original, but it's decent. I personally think the pictures in Ricardos ad make it look better than it really is.
Left original, right repro:
Left repro, right original:
The metal also had some weird roller markings down the length of it which I flattened out, but they aren't invisible if you study it closely. The two pieces of material I was sent had some deep scratches on the face, which could have been prevented if it was packed better (rolled photo is exactly how it was shipped, with the aluminum faces unprotected). Hopefully in the future Ricardo can do a better job with packing, especially considering the price. Something as simple as putting a long piece of paper inbetween the layers to keep it from chaffing during shipment would work perfectly. The metal overall was not totally stright, and when you flatten it out and sight it from end to end it was shaped like a bananna, maybe as much as 1" off from end to end. This was no problem on the short panels, but for the long panel this required some manipulation to make it into a usable piece.
Overall I think it's a very nice repro, and is a great alternative to the high priced and hard to find originals.

If anyone is interested in having me make a pair feel free to send me a PM or email me. I believe Ricardo charges ~$400 for enough material to fabricate a pair (80"), and I charge a little bit more than that to shape the trim and to assemble it into a completed pair of kick panels. The prices depend on which version you need (wood or hardboard) and whether you want it upholstered or not. Please contact me with your needs. |

Greg:
i agree with you that my aluminum panels repros might not be 100% similar to the original stuff , but believe me i did my best , unfortunately , people that could do that (to carve a steel cylinder by hand ) already passed away , there are some people that can still do it though (the same people who make currency stamping dies) that would ask a real fortune to do it .
a fortune that i would never be able to recover with just 6 units already sold in advance ....
by last , your panels looks pretty nice with my repros , and considering the price of an original unit ($1500) they are still a very good option !

I agree, this is a very difficult item to reproduce. I had been trying to have it done for several years. I applaud your efforts and have enjoyed working with your material. Hopefully the slow sales on your material pick up after people see some completed examples. I look forward to making more. |
