Sir, yes sir. You could add a set of rear suicide doors and a continental kit and dress like Captain Sticky.
I can't find it but somewhere is a picture of his car.
http://heroesinthenight.blogspot.com/2011/09/hero-profile-78-captain-sticky.html
You can even buy an album with his theme song.

"Captain Sticky was some obese slob who drove around in a Lincoln converted into a Stickymobile. Two cannons mounted on the hood of this vehicle fired peanut butter and jelly. How silly is that? Presented here is his polka/march theme." |

This is an option.
That said, I'm going to try to resolve the issue at a paper work level.
Thank very much for your suggestion.
Roll another one cowboy.

| Has anyone successfully registered black plates in the NN NNN L format? I realize the letter of the law only says L NN NNN (BLACK) or NN NNNL (BLUE) but figured I would ask. |

Color code? Plates were black with a kind of school bus yellow for the lettering, if that's what you mean.

| Right, I have some...but I want the colors to be as close as possible. I don't need a ticket or my plates taken or something stupid. |

Not sure if this has been asked before on any of the license plate threads I have checked today, but here goes.
Is there a way to figure out which plate letter, each year is supposed to have on it. AAA 123 for 1963 and BBB 123 for 1964 ect. I would figure the W-X-Y-Z would be for the, way later years. There are 7 years for the black plate issues and 26 letters in the alphabet, so the works out to almost 4 years per letter. |

Copied from another forum:
The 1963-69 series plate began alphabetically, with three letters beginning with AAA and ending in 1969 with approximately ZZW. Consequently, you can reasonably estimate the approximate year the plate was issued by the beginning three letters. For example, a plate beginning with D,E, F, G or H would have been isued in 1964. T, U or V would have been issued in 1967. W and X, 1968, Y and Z, 1969 and so on.
As an example, my early 68 was issued with VOH XXX plates.
Hope that helps. |

They way I think it worked is this - when the black '63 plates came out, all plates had to be replaced, so AAA 000 - RDA 999 were issued by the DMV offices, the issuing offices are below.
After RDA 999, I think they were assigned sequentially, like they are today, not by a particular office.

No problem! And now that my YOM registration is complete on my Notchback, the second plate I used as an example now shows the Program Area. |

Ok.
I got fed up with not getting any answers about color codes or anything both here and the rest of the intraweb. So I went down to the craft store with my cleanest plate and spent 15 minutes in the testor paint corner dabbing a tissue into various colors and mixing little dollops next to the letters until I found a combo of colors that worked. It turns out...gloss light brown and gloss yellow are the winners...black made kind of a muddy green. So I get 2 yellows and one brown and head home. Btw my Japanese wife thinks most of my gaijin tendencies are off the wall, but mixing paints in the store took the cake. In my defense, I bought the ones I tested from.
So, at home I sat down in a space on the kitchen floor with good light and out of the foot traffic zones. I got my stuff together, paints, mixing jar, newspaper, and qtips. I stripped the fuzz off one end of the q tips to make a mixer, and a dobber. I made a dot of straight yellow to see where I came from. I used one stick to measure out drops of brown and added them 3-4 at a time making notes as I went. After every mix I added a dot among the letters. I did this over and over again until I got it just right. Then I put a dot of what I thought my final color was directly on a letter and it was just about there...even allowing for a little fade.
My final formula was:
2 bottles of gloss yellow 1114
50 drops of light brown 1133 (this number will vary depending on batch and drop sizes)
Due to the inherent accuracy of drops start testing around 40 drops. Be patient a little bit of a dark color will go a long way. It's a lot harder to go back if you go over.
I'll add a picture of my tools and the testing results in the next couple days.
I will also be doing a step by step restore here as I complete my plates. |

Ladies and Gentlemen, the DMV has now published most of their registration manual online. FINALLY!
Scroll down to 21.340. Year of Manufacture. It's written exactly the same way in my manual. My manual that I PURCHASED while working for the DMV!
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/reg_hdbk_pdf/ch21_special_plates.pdf
Happy reading, should keep you guys busy for awhile.
Tom, the DMV still keeps track of the assignments to which DMV office for inventory purposes. And thanks AGAIN for the linkup to the smog website! |

Interesting they state you have to run the metal tabs while retaining the original stickers on the plate. I know a number of people who did not receive the metal tabs and just run the new stickers on the original plate.
Now sure how a LEO would even know whether or not this is an issue since the plates would still come back clear.
*Edited to correct tags to tabs. |

I just did one and they didn't even bother to send me the metal tabs (not that I was planning to run them anyway). All they sent was the year sticker and registration papers. I bought an old red month sticker on ebay and used them both directly on the plate. I'd never run the metal tabs on a black plate. |

I just noticed that both licenseplates.tv and cr8-one.com both have stopped making CA reproduction plates (as of 1/3/12).
I guess they got too good at what they were doing. |

Cross referencing the Mink Link, I finally got around to checking the 17 remaining black and yellow YOM plate configurations that I have against the DMV database and came out with one set of plates last registered in 1990 that are still on the system (valid YOM interference) that did not show up on the Smog Check site.
This means that only occasional weird slip-through-the-cracks plates are in question. Mink's link is not 100%, but it's so damn close I'm STILL calling it absolutely amazing, well proven to me. It's at LEAST as good as the DMV error rate. I know, I have personally issued more YOM plate registrations than ANY other person on the Samba. Thanks again Mink!! |

I use the dmv personalized plate order form online. I typed in the plate #. If the plate is available, it will let you continue. I have found quite a few sets that are not clear on Ebay.
