So I recently became the owner of a 70 bug, this all came about after years of watching my friend and neighbor PatterBon work relentlessly to get his 73 beetle on the road; he finally turned me on to the prospects of becoming a bug owner myself when my 91 honda prelude's tie rod snapped while PatterBon and i were driving down the road sending us into a skid and ending up in a ditch totaling the prelude, but now after about two months of owning my bug i can say it was all for the greater good because i ended up with a much better car. When i can ill post pictures and updates about what work i have done and what i do in the future.

So all in all when i got my bug it was in pretty good condition and it just needed a little work until i could get it working right for me to start driving it around, the engine had just been recently rebuilt, and the front bearings and seals had recently been replaced but the rear ones were grinding pretty loud. the brakes pretty much didn't work and it had no front shocks or sway bar and the rear shocks were barely working either, the ball joint boots are pretty hammered and could use to be replaced. the windshield was cracked and the headliner torn to shreds. theres also i hole in the front driver side pan. the drivers seat is pretty busted up, im not quite sure what it is but the pad in the head rest has slipped down and is sitting in the middle of the back of the seat and there is some metal sticking out of the back
So now for what i have gotten done up until now. Ive been fortunate enough to have dad looking over my shoulder giving me advice and help where ive needed it and his help has been invaluable due to the fact that himself has owned many a volkswagen and has plenty of exprience working on them. So far we have replaced the rear bearings and seals and replaced the rear shocks and took apart the brake assemblys and wire brushed the crap out it and cleaned it up as best as i could. When i had the front brake drums off i took a look at the bearings to make sure that they were indeed new, and they were but whoever had done it hadn't packed them with grease when they installed them! so i inspected them and packed them before sliding them back in. I replaced the front brake shoes and then slapped it all back together and then bleed the brakes. a few weekends later we popped out the windows and i preceded to remove the rear panels and seat and then pull out the old headliner. while i had the carpeting pulled back to get at the headliner in the back i noticed some really bad rust on my rear drivers side wheel well that i could literally see daylight on the other side through, after finishing getting the old headliner out we started to glue in the new one with only having me and my dad we were pretty short on hands and getting it started was pretty difficult but after getting the front started and clamped off we were able to get my brothers aid in installing the new windshield after popping that in with some soap water and string we finished off the headliner and reinstalled the rear and quarter windows. i vacuumed her up and put the interior back together, and now im waiting for a weekend without rain ( which are somewhat rare in poulsbo) to install the new sway bar, heater cables and ball joints. and to reattach my horn that i found in my trunk that one of the previous owners had for some reason removed. thats all for the time and again im sorry for the lack of pictures but ill try to get them up soon, im sure with patterbons bug hitting the road soon i'll have extra insinuative to bust out the camera. |

I like your bug Steveo, and having another person that's working on there's near me gives me more of a reason to go out and work on mine, can't wait to see yours all done and the way YOU want it...you'll find out when you really really get into it, bugs are unique as the people who own them, and nothing is right or wrong with what you do...you'll know if you've messed up because you'll end up in the Abortions Thread

lol yeah i dont think with you living up the street that you'd let me go so far as end up on the abortions thread, but yeah im hoping that ill be getting this job here soon and between now and when i start my training ill be able to get a big chunk of the work done since i have nothing else to sped my money on, the biggest job is gonna be getting all the holes from rust fixed, and then hopefully getting it painted before i have to move out cause i wont be able to while i need it as a daily driver, cause when i do it i want to make sure i do it right

so recently i have been noticing that my bug has been stalling when i come to a stop at the bottom of this hill near my house and sometimes if i come to a stop really slow i can keep it from dying on me, its only the one hill and its pretty steep but i havent had issues anywhere else, any ideas what could be causing this?

So today at the junk yard with Patterbon i was able to pick up a fresh air nob tt i had been missing, a rear window that still has the connections for the rear window defrosters because my bug has everything for it but the connections on the glass itself had been broken off before i got it, and a rear view mirror because my old one was crumbling away, after me and PatterBon posted the video of the dome light i went back out and messed with the wires to the dome light and got it working without the door alarm screeching at me, hopefully tomorrow morning i can run back out to the junk yard and pick up a set of front seats that were in really good condition and not have to worry about anything jabbing me in the back while im driving around anymore and try and get up some actual good pics of my bug
