Picked up my trans today from wright gearbox. Got the basic sportsman package, Close Ratio 3rd & 4th Gears, Welded 3rd & 4th Hubs, Steel Shift Forks, Hardened Keys, Chromoly Pinion Nut. I wanted to step up and get a new 1st & 2nd gear set but it wasnt in the budget at this time.

I've ripped second gear apart twice now. I would have take the first and second over some of the other stuff in there. More strain on gears that get it rolling. I just put a Weddle 1st and 2nd in on the latest rebuild.

avalonbug Mon Nov 09, 2009 8:14 pm

1st and 2nd gear cost as much as everything else that was done.

Good info to know, it will get done either when it breaks or when it goes back to wright gearbox @ the end of the season for freshing up

riNR Mon Nov 09, 2009 8:35 pm

Ya I think I paid $850 ( duty and taxes and Canadian exhange) for the Weddle 1st and 2nd gear. Luckily I didn't have to pay shipping on it as I bought it through a racer who brought it back from a race in California.

I wish I was poor enough to do a build like yours.

chubby53 Fri Nov 13, 2009 10:50 am

ditto here, when i say going cheap for me it means scrounging parts off of any parts cars or parts shelves around my shop. and trying to fab and weld everything myself. my ass hurts if i spend $100 at the local parts house.

more power too ya though. Good to see not everyone is hurting from this economy.

Started installing lights today

WOW. Very cool car man. I think i'd have to parade around town with it on the trailer for a bit before I could put it in the garage to finish it.

I'm glad I looked at these pics now though. You must have accidentally painted your rear arm orange!

...man.... that could have been embarassing. Glad we cought it now. :D

Started to put everything together and ran into a little issue, the rear trans support tubes run right in front of the exhaust ports on my motor.

Got me some new front seats, I picked up a set of 2" wider racetrim suspension seats.

As for the motor, Its still sitting on the bench as a short block still waiting on the cyl head guy. The motor should be on the dyno the end of next week. I turned the builder loose on the motor and hes got some sick ideas for this ol vw motor like a 4" exhaust (you can kinda see in the prev. post picture), TB72 turbo, thats all he has told me about. should be real interesting to see what he comes up with.

Dropped the car back off to Mosebilt to get alignment done, charge shocks with nitrogen, mount battery, and few other little stuff.

If all goes well I should be ready for new years!

quick update.
Battery is mounted
Front end is finished, cycles 13.5" of travel. limited with " the ole hook n rod set up"
overall wheel base is 125"
Rear alignment is done, dont know what it has for travel #'s but will find out within the next couple of days once the rear limit strap mounts are finished up.
Shift shaft is done
Ordered new front tires mickey thompson baja belted hp 31 x 7.50s. still need rims
Got all what I needed as for brake line hardware from Bonaco, never thought to put this into the budget. I will have about 250 bucks in brake line stuff
I plan on working overtime on this thing all weekend to get it ready for the motor.
