Well the fuel filter is in the engine bay and if the fuel hose connecting to it is too rotted or becomes disconnected while the engine's hot, you've got a perfect recipe for an engine fire. That's why most people usually place the fuel filter somewhere out of the way. Like near the gas tank.

just to elaborate abit further as this is true yea but if the hose is rotten it will leak if there's a filter there or not

its a few things, those $1 filters are made of cheap low grade plastic, they're not designed to be on the pressure side of a fuel pump, they're made for suction instead and the people that usually install them in the pressure side are also the same ones that leave them there for 10 years before replacing them so the plastic go brittle and can shatter on the odd occasion

but the main problem is the the brass hose fittings that only press fit into the carby, and the fuel pump on earlier models
these work loose over time the added weight of the fuel filter bouncing around helps pull the fitting out of the carb or fuel pump.
the engine will keep running with whats in the fuel bowl spraying fuel all over the distributor

this is a real problem with the badly made bolt together style brazillian pumps

people just install them there as its the easiest hose to chop into and you can see the filter,
the only time vw installed inline filters at the factory was in curved screen supers and it was under the fuel tank

thats tidy as 74restore,

can i offer my $0.02
it would finish it off nicely to replace the missing plastic plug lead clips
that kinda spoils it the leads just flopping around looking for somthing hot to melt on

i thought the same thing, just haven't gotten around to it. I have tried to be careful about them resting on the manifold, etc.

thanks for the tip. i will probably invest in some in a short while

Since you asked, get a real air cleaner and distributor cap. And read up on the Samba!

stingrowe Sun Feb 28, 2010 8:25 am

Hi

can i ask what the issue is with the distributor cap? just so i know what to look for

mnussbau Sun Feb 28, 2010 12:30 pm

The see-through caps are inferior quality and may cause problems. You're better off with a stock Bosch cap...they're usually a burnt-orange color (or sometimes black).

your generator is 90degrees out of alignment as well, which can cook the bearings in it

For crankcase venting. Hose is hooked up to stock aircleaner.
