My father always used a cup holder insert that fit in the ash tray hole in his 66. I have never had need for one in my 67. The ash tray cup holder may very well be some authentic accessory, he has had the car since it was a year old.

forget drinking and drive -- there's a reason there aren't any in there...

Have you tried GriotsGarage.com? You can mount that cup holder any where on a verticle surface. They actually work quite well. I have seen them occassionally here on the SAMBA too.

gt1953, I like the tray, do you have any wider pictures of it?
What did you make the tray out of and how did you attach it?

Just cause I posted pictures in my gallery of the cup holder with beers in them does not mean I drink and drive. This was for observation purposes only.
If yall are interested in how I did mine out of PM me. several VW folks like the idea over the bamboo tray as nothing fall off or through it plus the hide away cup holder.

A few years ago I saw a interview with Alos Ruf. He was behind the wheel of one of his 700+hp modified Porsche's and when asked why there were no cup holders in the car he replied "at 180mph its best to have both hands on the steering wheel".

The best cupholders are sold by Scott at German Supply.

Really.

... i myself dislike all the center consoles. i bought a universal single cup holder from pep boys. mounted on the passenger side of the tunnel. is very small, and don't take up a lot of room. cheap and it looks good too.

Have you seen one of these?

Fits over the tunnel, works pretty well and has a small area for other stuff.

JinxedSydney Thu Jul 23, 2009 8:40 am

Has anyone used the chug and plug from MidAmerica Motorworks?

Yellowbeard Thu Jul 23, 2009 9:09 am

Roll of duct tape. Multitasks.

I've used that one and the only problem I had with it was that it blocked my stereo when I had something in it.

It has been like that for about a year now, and you are the first too notice. I thought it was obvious but thats not the case I guess.

I have one and it sucks.
It gets in the way of your right leg and keeps tipping to the side.
I spend more time looking at it to make sure it’s straight, then I do looking at the road.

Use your door pockets as a cup holder.
Also, the cop can't see if it is a beer or a soda, because they are so deep.
