Is this a reasonable approximation? I know you do not want to drive 395.

mtnroads Tue Sep 29, 2009 12:56 am

Brian, in the yellow Baja, Myself in the Thingster and Ian in Scrappy will all be coming from BLTNVW.

Looks like it will be around freezing at night and really nice in the days.

ridge racer Tue Sep 29, 2009 1:42 pm

We have 23 rooms at Bruno's.
15+ bikes
5+ cars
I'll keep you posted as we get closer.

Ian Epperson Tue Sep 29, 2009 1:44 pm

Eating the dust of 15+ bikes? I wouldn't mind lagging behind a bit.

Ian Epperson Tue Sep 29, 2009 1:47 pm

BTW, what is the comms of choice? Are most people running CB's, little FRS radios, something else, nothing?

I've been thinking of mounting a CB for a long time. If most people on this run have CB's, then it may finally be time.

ridge racer Tue Sep 29, 2009 1:58 pm

Don't worry the bikes dust, they will smoke us time wise! We'll have a meeting before we head out to make the trip as easy and care free as we can. We will have to use the buddy system at all forks in the road.
I don't have any coms.

Skidmark Tue Sep 29, 2009 5:27 pm

Weather could be a big factor for you guys. Snow in Truckee is not unheard of this time of year. The Rubicon trail just received it's first dusting of the year.

I would love to do this run sometime, but this year there is just no way. Please post a full trip report when you guys get back (take lots 'o pics!).

Good luck, and be safe! 8)

Brian and I installed CB's in our cars last night at my place. I had forgotten how much fun they are - we easily chatted back and forth on his drive home, and had perfect reception between our driveways 1.5 miles apart.

Pretty inexpensive these days as well.

ridge racer Fri Oct 02, 2009 9:42 pm

I haven't used a CB in years. Did you still get some chatter from other CB'ers? It was real fun back in the day to chat up peeps. I even got a few dates from my CB days.
I'm not going to put a CB in the car as I wouldn't be able to hear it. My car is way to loud. I'd have to set it up in my car com radio to hear it.
So I just about finished my front end upgrade. It should be done by this Sat. p.m.
So we will see you all soon at the inn.

sam_w Fri Oct 02, 2009 9:49 pm

I went to Fry's this afternoon, and got a CB, Antenna mount for my heavy duty bumpers, antenna and cable.

I will drill the bumpers with my heavy duty drill at home and be at Ian's home at 2PM to check it all out.

So Brian, Ian and I will all have CB's that have been checked out to at least communicate with each other.

Brian M Fri Oct 02, 2009 10:56 pm

I probably will be getting a new antenna and mounting it permanently - this magnet mount stick on just isn't workin for me. I did get my noise issues sorted out, new plug wires and it is much better.

Have fun guys. If you're coming back down the Pyramid HWY, stop in at "Moon Rocks." It's off Pyramid and Winnemuca Rd.

Wow guys. Sounds like a great trip. I wish I could do it, too.

sam_w Sat Oct 03, 2009 10:48 am

I will try to take pics and videos that I will post on youtube for you.

ridge racer Sat Oct 03, 2009 12:31 pm

Moon Rocks for shure, we have a memorial for a different friend that got killed in a freak accident their also. That is a must stop for not only a cool factor but also for personal reflections.

I'm going to pick up a hand held CB for the trip & to intro CB's in my sons life. At least I won't have to get out of the car to talk small talk.

see ya soon!

Ian Epperson Sat Oct 03, 2009 1:51 pm

My neighbor loaned me his hand-held CB for the trip for someone else's use. It's got a mini-jack head-set plug - can that plug into your comms system RR?

mtnroads Sun Oct 04, 2009 6:53 am

only a few more days now.. cars ready, finially closed in the hole over the trans and put in a sturdy shelf. way quieter inside. looks like there is going to good weather. 60 to 70 degree highs. if it does rain/snow tues/wed might help with dust. Ill be bringing my radar gun to use at the dry lake if anyone wants to check their top speed. thinking my car will top out at about 85 mph. checking out cb's been thinking about getting one for a while now. we will see...

Skidmark Sun Oct 04, 2009 8:15 am

A GPS works really good for speed measurements too! 8)

Ground speed is in the top left corner...
