So I have my headliner which came with no inst. (bus depot). So do I install the front area first? Just need some guidance. Thanks, vwdon

Rear first, front last.

Strike that, reverse it.

Hmmm... I've tried starting at both ends and found it easier to get the majority lined up with the windows by starting at the back. More opportunity to play with the cab area where it transitions at the B pillars for less wrinkles. But the windows really have to be sorta lined up first.

On a truck, panel or kombi there's no choice but to start at the back so I've carried that over to deluxes with success.

neither one, glue should go on the sides first. the rear most metal rod gets mounted on hooks just forward of the rear hatch torsion rods. then pull toward the front and temporarily attach vinyl to the windshield frame with binder clips. then stretch side to side attaching to the side windows with the some more binder clips. once you have all the wrinkles worked out, then you can start glueing with "3M 80 Vinyl & Rubber"- home depot 12 bucks/can. of course, it's a lot more complicated than that.

one thing for sure, if you glue to the front before hooking the rearmost rod into those roof hooks you will be soooo screwed. that is some super tuff glue.

Joe, the guy who supervised ours passed away last month from heart failure and cancer but I know his installers started at the overhead hoops like Dan mentioned. They also pre-tensioned everything before they began. All in all Joe told me he did about 3000 Buses and VW's in their 40 years in business.

There is another reason you want to pre-tension. Sometimes the kits can have errors or like our experience, you can all too easily copy someone else's mistake and have too many or not enough hoops. (Joe called me to come look at ours before he glued it and said - "this doesn't look right because... it should be like this instead" - it turned out he was right, the same year bus we took parts out of had been done once before with the wrong hoops because of a fire.) You want to be sure everything fits and all the hardware is there before gluing. If the headliner is too short or long and needs custom changes, you want to do it before starting to glue. Our sunroof panel for example was too short and they had to stitch on an extra piece. I think they used small pieces of the u-channel edge trim vinyl to hold it before they glued it - like the kind in the photo below.

You can get extra headliner material for a small price usually when you buy the headliner if you request it.
