View original topic: My latest roll video from Wellsville, OH 8/8/09
HILLAHOLIC Mon Aug 10, 2009 7:10 pm

We had a good time in Wellsville this weekend. I had a major roll on my favorite hill by the waterfall Saturday. I majorly tweaked my frame, bent a 3x3 so bad the sidewall was ½ on the ground, and bent a front spindle. After about 3hrs of work we got the 3x3 bent back and rode the rest of Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday Trent rolled his but no major damage. We headed over to Left turn hill and Trent’s motor locked up so we left around 8pm Sunday.

Out of the several tries I made it once and rolled it twice, so I think I am done climbing this hill forever…..

I want to thank everyone who helped fixing my rail

Here are a few videos from the weekend.

glad you're okay....

maybe modify the strap with a grapple hook that the guy at the top could just toss in the cars?

I'm glad that you head is OK. IMHO Helmets are a must on something like that. Your frame did what it’s supposed to do. Unlike this poor fellow. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=354795&highlight=lost+friend

Time to get a helmet bud. That ammo box falling out at the end of the second video could've been MUCH worse.

Otherwise, glad to see you're okay.

Well I got my fame almost back to normal it was pushed to the driver side by about 5”. Now it’s off maybe ¼” I found 3 welds that are cracked and need to clean some paint off to inspect to see if there is more. Anywhere there is a crack I’m going to grind the welds and re-weld it and gusset it if I can. Also I will be putting in an X brace behind the seats now, that I have been putting off.

HILLAHOLIC Mon Aug 31, 2009 9:23 pm

I’m just about fixed up after my last roll. Fixed the cracked welds, put a new A brace in (some how it hit a tree), added a few windshield gussets, and finally put an X brace in. All I have left to do is a front spindle and beam and need to get a new light. The light also hit a tree in my roll, glad I tried to hide them under the shock towers.

I added some weather stripping on the roof to help soften the hits when I roll.

I got the front end apart and it doesn’t look good. Afterburnt is going to help fix the spindle and if he can the beam and arm, if not I’ll just run it until I get the money for a new beam and arm.

Looks close to straight :D

Whats them boogers for? is that to help sling the grease into the bearings?

Geez man  . glad your ok. That could have definately ended very bad.

What 3x3's were those? mild steel? chromoly?

Their Dean’s arms from woodsbuggy.com, just mild steel. They actually held up very well considering that is the 3rd roll on them. The only part that bent was the inner pivit mount where the big allen goes. The only reason that bent was because it broke 2 grade 8 spring plate bolts and ripped one bolt out of the spring plate.

BugMan114 Sat Sep 05, 2009 9:43 am

ahh gotcha  . the reason i asked was because i trying to decide weather to buy mild steel or chromoly 3x3's but one guy i talked to said, in the event of a roll over, i might actually crack the arm off, instead of bend it, because chromoly is much harder. and haven't found anyone yet, who has bent or cracked chromoly 3x3's yet.

Anyhoo. Good luck on the replairs. hope to see some more video's of your rail (hopefully staying on all fours........ or atleast two, i like wheelies  )
