As the topic.

I've made a search on the forum but have zero results

Thanks

now thats an interesting idea. drive with your safari open and keep the bugs out of your face. hmm....

Ben1000 Tue Aug 11, 2009 3:22 pm

Magnetic sealing strip from an old fridge + screen + glue, then shape the whole mess to match the inside of window frame.

It works well to let air in and keep the bugs out when parked, but the weak magnet strip would probably let it blow out of place while moving. (never even tried it)

Sorry I don't have any pics.

Expect a ticket too as it would hinder your vision.

I was under the impression that he meant for camping or whatnot...... I think that would be nice too.

Either to be honest. I open the rear safari as well as the front whilst driving to try and create a "wind tunnel" effect though it's not 100% efficient in stopping bugs entering the bus.

Ben1000, have you made the "solution" to which you refer? Some pictures would be real cool and I'm sure others would be as interested as I am.

Crofty, I think it would come down to the attitude of the officer that pulled you (as often is the case). I've looked through the jalousie fly screens and vision isn't impaired greatly, if at all.

I'm surprised these can't be purchased "off the shelf" as there's clearly a market for them judging by the 243 views this post has received in such a short time

Im kinda with crofty, I would expect to get a ticket, BUT I expect to get a ticket everytime I drive with them open. I do like the idea, I have been hit by some really painful bugs.

I also like the idea for camping too

seems like the screens would wistle being that all the wind would go through them unlike a jalousie where the wind just brases (sp?) them

Lol, there's so much noise coming from my engine I'd almost welcome a soothing whistling sound :)

I thought of the same thing, or at least he need for them when I had safaris. I think good solution would be a sub frame with a screen hinged just like the safari. Gives you the option of safaris open with or without screens

Just wait until you get a cat climbing on them while driving..

You've got me thinking there. I might have a crack at making some...

I would think that black screening would be barely visable to a cop. Unless you were pulled for something else he wouldn't likely see it.

rebapuck Thu Aug 13, 2009 8:59 am

I've often thought automakers were missing the boat by not putting in-glass defrosters in the front windshield. They do it in the rear. But, I suppose it's the visability thing. Never mind the number of people (me included) who start driving as soon as they have a 6" hole cleared in the ice.

I've always found that windsheild defroster system works great on a bus.
Turn the bus on, turn the heat all the way on, kick the heat lever to blow all the air at the windsheild, go scrape the ice off the windows, get in and go.
With a 64-67 kombi having the full volume of air coming out the dash vents is annoyingly high blowing in my eyes. But even in my 61 deluxe (smaller heater tube, also has a heater outlet in back) the glass clears efficiently.
The air from the dash vents is aimed perfectly to clear the glass, much better than in a beetle.
Perhaps your heater tube/fresh air connections are leaky or you need a thermostat system installed to help the engine warm up?

rebapuck Thu Aug 13, 2009 10:18 am

Actually, any car new or old, has this problem if you live in a cold climate. Even my 2006 Toyota has to warm up before it can defrost. The rear starts melting almost as soon as it's turned on. Those teeny tiny wires in the glass are almost invisible and, for me, work faster.

That's not to say my VWs couldn't be more efficent.

I find that the bus defroster works better than the one in Greg's '94 Honda.
The Honda definately has better heat (or maybe the lack of drafts makes it feels that way).
I think it is about the angle of the air blowing out of the vents. That's why I wondered if your system would benefit from a checkup.
Does it get that much colder in North Carolina than Washington State?

I find that people with any kind of car tend to scrape ice off the windows rather that waiting for it to melt. Anyhow, this is pretty off topic ... not to do with safari screens.

Never had a bug hit me driving with the safaris open. Then again, I'm not big on blasts of air blowing in my face and don't open the drivers side more than an inch or so, unless I'm going real slow.
Might be nice for camping, but annoying for driving.

rebapuck Thu Aug 13, 2009 12:24 pm

I don't have safaris but we all have the door sliders. Anyone come up with a screen that doesn't blow out? or off?

Dave24 Thu Aug 13, 2009 12:39 pm

I've seen some f/s in the clasifieds.
