I was recently hit in the rear and the drivers insurance has taken care of everything and I should be getting my Super back in a few weeks. I have heard horror story after horror story regarding getting my Super fixed and I have been very lucky.

Good Luck!

Remember that these cars are made out of "REAL:" sheet metal////not the paper thin stuff of today.

yes they were... and very little of it... vw's don't usually fare well against a 5k pound vehicles...

My 1971 SB was hit in the driver's door back in 1992. I was talking to a friend in a grocery store parking lot and looked up to see what was causing an unusual noise. My SB was being pushed across the parking lot (dirt not asphalt) by a Chevy conversion van. My door had far more damage. The window was up so it didn't sustain any damage.

State Farm came out to evaluate the SB and told me it was a total loss. Since I worked at a new car dealership with a body shop, I had already talked to the body shop manager and was prepared. When the adjuster told me the car was a total, I handed him the folder for the past year's work...including all receipts. I explained that I had completed all the work myself. After looking through all the receipts, the adjuster decided the car would cost more to total than the deal I was offering.

We finally worked out a price and I kept the title. The final price was based on their offer plus parts and labor to have the used door painted. I did all the prep to have it painted and swapped window components, handles, etc. The prep for the used door took a Saturday afternoon. The door was at the painter for two days. It took the next Saturday to swap parts and installed the new door.

Some adjusters are real jerks, other genuine car lovers who understand. If you get a jerk, just ask for his supervisor. If he refuses, or claims to be the one "in charge", tell him you need to do some research and see if there really is someone else to talk to. I had to do this when my Fox wagen was broadsided. The guy who was in charge of the guy who was in charge, called and apologized for the attitude of the adjuster. Then we worked out the deal.

He was only two years off. What do you expect from someone from Booger City. ;^)

Looks like it could have been much worse. Hopefully your wife will be back on the road again soon.

I haven't had the pleasure of a vehicle accident for quite some time, but it strikes me that ksdageddie is closer to the nail of the head here. If the other driver had insurance other than "no fault" and was charged with the accident, shouldn't THEIR insurance cover the cost of repairs? I thought that only the victim or the victim's insurance company could claim "total". I'd hold the line on this one. If it costs more than the other driver's insurance wants to pay to repair the vehicle back to the "pre-accident" condition, then perhaps you have a good case for a lawsuit.

Am I totally off base here?

just thought I would update....

back and running again... after a drawn out process of who was at fault
the inurance company finally paid out and I was able to get the work done.

The bodyshop that I go to was pretty busy, but allowed me to come in and do the work myself and make sure I did it right... ( always helps when you know someone.) so I finally learned how to do some bodywork and weld.

Thanks go out to Mike of Mike's garage in Bessemer City, NC for his help and direction as well.

Fit donor door to make sure B Pillar is fixed right.

Finished result.

Thanks again for everyones input and advice on dealing with the insurance situation...

Go to where the Beetle is and TAKE PICTURES OF IT ON ALL FOUR CORNERS.

I had a truck that had some damage towed away from an accident and taken to the insurance companies adjuster lot.

Somewhere between the accident site and the lot, they REALLY tore up the bed of my truck BAD. But I didn't have the pictures to prove it, I only took pics of the side of the accident, and I was lucky to have the presence of mind to do that.

I found some pics of the truck that were older and used them, and eventually got the insurance company to repair the bed. It took months and months of phone calls and hassles and being told I am a liar to finally get the job done-which would have been sorted out immediately had I of taken pics of all 4 corners of the truck.

It's a good idea to carry a disposable camera in the glove box for just this reason.
