One of my first jobs was at a full service gas station. We had this customer who would get out of his bug and walk inside to wait while we put gas in his car. As he walked away he'd always yell back " check the oil and radiator level. He thought this was real funny because the new guys would look forever. Not finding the radiator they'd go in and ask where it was. The store manager and the customer would have a great laugh, at the poor 15 year olds expense.
I was working one day and he made this request to me. I checked his oil which was o.k. I went inside and told the customer is oil was O.K., but the water level was low in his radiator so I added some water..... I never saw anybody run so fast to his car. I still laugh 35 years later. |

| What you should of done was stand there with the water hose and call to him that his water was low. |

Once i called the local autozone, and said
"i need a water pump for a 1979 volkswagen bus"
she said she couldn't find it, and called a manager over. i could hear them talking "click on this" "check in this section". the manager took the phone, and said "i'm sorry its taking so long, i can't seem to find it, i'm gonna call the warehouse and see if they have it". i told them i had the part #. it was "I" "D" ten "T" . (spells idiot). i can hear her type it in, then i hear the lady say fuck you, and i hang up laughing. |

| i really can't help it. the guys that work there are just plain stupid. they know absolutely nothing about cars or parts. once i called them and told them i had a 63 ford f100 with a 7.3L turbo diesel. they typed in some stuff, and said "ok, what do you need?". another time i told them i needed a radiator for a chevy corvair. they actually looked it up and gave me me two options, a standard radiator, and a heavy duty radiator. i asked them what car they tped in and they said 65 chevy corvair (i thought they may have hit corvette or something). i hung up. we (me and fellow co-workers) usually do that at work, when there's nothing to do, hahaha. |

Wow  That's bad. My friend has had to go behind the counter of our Autozone several times to find stuff, since the idiots working there insist they dont' have the part, when they actually do. |

of course. Anytime you go in a parts store, always look at the screen, and see what the guy types in. half the time its the wrong thing. i work at advance auto, and if i desperately need a part, and we don't carry it in stock, i'm pretty much forced to go there. most of the times they punch in the wrong year, or wrong part, and many times will mis spell the part and tell me they don't carry it. the f@cker will type in "STARTR" it pulls nothing up, and tells me we don't have it. i then have to point out you mis-spelled the damn word. sometimes they are just as clueless as can be. it took me like 15 mins to explain to them what a pushrod tube was. i had to tell them to just type it in and it pulled up. they kept saying
Dumbass- "you need a pushrod?"
Me- "NO, i need the tube that the pushrod goes in"
Dumbass- "pushrods go on both sides of the heads under the intake" (like its a friggin V8 )
Me- "No thats on v6's and v8's, this is a 4 cylinder flat 4 volkswagen motor, they go thru tubes"
Dumbass- "OH, then you need the timing belt, right?"
WTF!!!!! Where the hell did timing belt come from? this was a true conversation between me and the retard behind the counter. |

| ahh. yeah pretty much. and its not the store name that determine who's better. its the employees. the autozone here are full or retards, but the advance auto here has a lot more knowledgeable employees but the autozone in a nearby city (lake city), those people know their stuff, versus the advance there, the employees are useless. so its not the store that determines how good it is, its the employees. one advance auto might have knowledgeable employees, but the advance down the street might have dumbasses who bearly know how to change their own damn oil. its up to you to shop around and find what place knows their stuff. |

agree with you 100%...unfortunately *overall* it's a pretty safe bet that neither place is a good place to go for advice... That said, I use an Advance Auto locally when I need them, but *only*(and I mean that) because of the "parts pro" that I've been buying parts from since I was about 14... He was a young guy then, as was I, but he knew his stuff and these days is the only person in the store that even knows how to use all the specification and breakdown books available to them. He also is the only one that will find you the part you need, even if Advance doesn't have it... He's a major reason that many of the customers(commercial and walk-in) use them... when/if he leaves they will be on the same level as Autozone to me, that is, if i can walk over to the shelf and pick it up, I'll buy it, if not, I'll get it elsewhere...
(I asked a guy behind the counter at Advance once for four autolite 64 sparkplugs... he said he couldn't sell em to me if I didn't give him the year, make and model for the car... so I told him, 68 VW sedan with a 1.6 turbocharged boxer engine.... he really was confused after a few minutes...) |

hahaha, nice. and i agree. its usually because of one or two people that the store does so well. in my store its either me or the boss. he's been messing with cars for a while, so he knows his stuff. he's owned over 50 cars in his lifetime. to him tho, a car is a throw away item. when it breaks, he sells it and gets another. I've just worked on car since i was 10, so learned by working on them, and working on other people's cars. but for the most part, you really should know what you want before walking into the store, because 9 times out of 10, they won't have a clue.
Many times when a customer calls, or someone walks in, they either ask for me or the boss.
p.s. man i love it when a customer comes in and knows the part number. if they told you they couldn't get it, then i would have just walked over to the next guy, lol. |
