I need to put a oil cooler on my baja and need suggestions on mounting locations. The engine is a stock 1600DP with a 34 PICT3 carb with the fiberglass engine hood. Don't wan't to mount it in the cab. Show me your pictures of how you have done yours! I need ideas before I burn up my car. Thanks.

My engine looks like this with the cover removed.

some old pics when I installed a cooler. this is full flow w/ a thermostat in line.

thats not bad 2gr8dgs.

just put some 90 deg. fittings on the oil cooler lines to tidy it up a bit.

I agree. I actually dont run an aux cooler any more. I know barbed fittings with hose clamps aren't ideal, but I never had a prob with them.

I used to have mine mounted on the roof then I relocated it to the fiberglass engine cover section. I also use barbed fitings and hose clamps and have never had a problem.

I would really like to not mount the cooler on the roof. Any pictures of coolers mounted to the rear bumper? The cooler I want has the fan so I don't think I have the room to mount it on the firewall between the engine. Thanks and keep the ideas coming.

Jeff Hibbard has a section on oil coolers in his Baja Bugs book with recommendations.

So your motor is okay? I thought you had really bad noises coming out of it on the way home from the SoCal Bajas meeting? Knowing you it has already been rebuilt and installed, and just needing an oil cooler now! 8)

here is where I mounted mine

hey Bob.
do you have room inside the rear bumper ?

I don't know if the motor is OK yet. It seems to be running fine today but I did not get it really hot. I will pull it next weekend because it was too damn hot this weekend. I figure if I am going to pull the engine and it looks OK I might as well put on one of those in-out pumps and install a cooler with a fan. If the motor is shot I will have to go with another plan.

I don't have much room inside the rear pumper so I am thinking about creating some mounts so that it is connected to the bumper but sits about the same height as my air cleaner.

If your cooler is not too big you can mount it on the fiberglass engine cover, That is if you are going to install the engine cover.

dirtkeeper Sun Aug 30, 2009 8:49 pm

I'm thinkin about installing one. It looks like there may be enough room above the transmission driver side but i haven't actually mocked it up yet. Any body put it there?

That might not be an ideal spot to mount it, It should be out in the open where it is exposed to the most amount of airflow possible.

My cooler is above the transmission just below the rear package tray, the only time i have an issue is in really hot weather, above 100 and i run it hard. The oil temp will climb to 225 and the pressure gets low at idle. Otherwise i have no problems. I do have a stock doghouse cooler also.

is that with a fan?

If the cooler is mounted to have unrestricted air for the fan to suck... or is it blow? then does it matter if its exposed to air flow?

When its exposed outside the car it gets more air flow but it would seem to get more direct sunlight which seems like it would heat the metals and hoses make cooling more difficult than if installed out of the direct sunlight.
