I don't have a fan on the external cooler, been thinking of adding one but i have run the piss out of this car for over 5 years and it has been good so far. We even made a 2 oclock run this year at the night run. It was 108 outside. It got a little warm but no real issues.

I always had the idea of mounting it up in the front some how with a grill for protection and cleanly run lines back to the motor, figure it would get the most direct air in that location, am I wrong? I see the german look guys do it all the time with their crazy autobahn cruisin street machines....

Since my engine is not full-flow at the moment I think I will try this cooler and pump combination. Do you think this cooler will fit under the package tray above the transmission? Anyone mounting like this, like Baja 5, have a cooler taken out by a rock?

Thats the same pump I have been using for a long time and have never had a problem with it, or oil pressure.

I saw this in the gallery looks tight

Here's where I had my cooler for my old engine:

My new 2110cc engine only has a stock doghouse cooler and it works fine.

If you do not have full flow on a engine, shouldn't you keep the OG doghouse cooler instead of a aftermarket oil cooler?

Then if you do have full flow, wouldn't it be wise to still keep the OG doghouse cooler and then add an additional cooler in the full flow system?

I had always thought/heard testing showed that the OG doghouse was more efficient at cooling the oil than an aftermarket cooler.

I have the stock doghouse cooler and a 73 fan shroud. At the end of a long climb, a 3 mile full throttle 2nd gear sand-wash run or long freeway drive the car gets really hot. I do not plan on replacing the stock cooler but want to add to it. Those guys who say stock is good enough on a Baja Bug either drive in the forest or don't go on SoCal Baja runs.

Ever think of mounting the cooler on the front?
I did and it gets max air and cooling. I ran a little bigger oil pump
but it works nice

I have a 2110 and was in need of a additional cooler as well. I was gonna mount it under the tray. My problem was my baja has a bus tranny with the tilt mount. Also my oil filter is already in that area so there just wasn't room. This is what my friends and I came up with.

Kinda hard to see in the pics but the bottom of the cooler sits about an inch above the stock air vents. The idea was that the air that didn't make it into the vents would help supply the cooler. The mount also acts as a guide for the oil lines.

Here are pics of the rest of the plumbing

Hope that helps give you some ideas. Although this thread is pretty well dated and you most likely already have it figured out.

I wound up mounting the cooler on the package tray. It was a tight fit but it works well. Will take pictures when I can.

my oil cooler also goes right on top of the transmition right before the motor, you cant see it unless you get under the car, this keeps it cool because of all the air flowing trough it. if you don't plan on going trough lakes what i did in mine was cut a whole right behind the rear seats and put the fan there with the oil cooler right under it, ill try to get some pictures to show you, this helps your oil cooler last a little longer.

My only concern with mounting the cooler under the package tray or under the car would be getting water on the fan and posibly shorting it out.

thesatelliteguy Wed Nov 04, 2009 9:51 am

Those fans are ment to get water on them. you just couldnt drive through a lake and submerge it in water and expect it to work

i agree with the doghouse. you would think that would be suffiecent especially for a 1600. just a thought, but if it's getting that hot have you checked your belt, or your valves lately? just my .02. Also if you arn't using it for offroading then i would put it above the rear window. maybe fab up some cool brackets to hold it. maybe something with some kind of cover to give it shade in the sun? lots of different options though. kind of depends on the user.

put the furshlugginer thing under the windshield and use it to defrost.

bizmarkie Wed Nov 04, 2009 6:20 pm

what oil fitler are most people runnign?

sxuxrxf Thu Nov 05, 2009 1:25 pm

Wix or Napa Gold - I think they're the same, just Napa branded. This is usually the one recommended, while Frahm is always slammed.

I have always used K&N filters in my offroad cars. They are more expensive but test show that they are very effective. Remember Dirt kills!

Fozz28 Wed Dec 30, 2009 11:40 am

The fram hp1 shown in my pictures has been replaced with a K&N. On cold start ups I kept blowing the rubber seal out of the frams. Once I changed to K&N that problem went away.
