I'm very, very, very, very new to vw bugs(and cars in general). I just bought a 71 baja bug. Im curious. Is it possible to make my bug 4x4? If so, is it something you would suggest? I was also wondering if it were possible to make a body out of fiberglass? Like shape some styrofoam to the form i want it then coat the styrofoam in fiberglass. Lastly, I know that you can put different engines in the bugs like a porsche engine. can i put any kind of engine in my bug, such as f150 engine or are there only certain vehicles compatible?

All snide comments aside....

Yes you can make it a 4x4 either by lifting body off STOCK pan and putting body on another chassis either with VW SYNCRO (4wd) parts or "other after market parts"..... You you can make any body style you want out of fiberglass it only takes time and knowledge of making the mold and working fiberglass. (maybe check out "dune buggies")... And you can put any engine you want in it.... After all that is done, you do not have a BAJA you have a "custom"..... Maybe you should have started with a tube frame custom build because most of original BAJA and BAJA concept has been done away with...

The really cool thing about a Baja is its simplicity, its ability to be modified to perform better, staying within the two wheel drive arena, adding some big horsepower up to a reasonable 200 hp and stay 4 cylinder aircooled (more if you are crazy enough)... The ability to improve suspension .... All this and stay within most of the original design parameters of pan (frame) and body.... And go almost any place big FWD machines can go. That is what having a BAJA is all about......

You can run a vette motor on a vw transmission. Kennedy engineering sells over 60 kits to fit 100 different applications for a vw trans. google them. Not cheap! I have seen bugs with bronco and blazer 4X4 frames under them. You can buy fiberglass bug bodies. Theres one in the classifieds that pops up every once in a whille on samba in indiana.

What do you actually want it for? Racing, mud slinging, beating on or jumping? It sounds like you'd want a buig body dropped on a Bronco chassis.
It soumds like what you want is to get a frame & drive train from a 4x4 and add a bug frame. Start by making your bug into a baja with the mods listed around here. If you REALLY want 4x4, it would be much simpler to use an existing set up and buy a used $100 body to chop up.
