hi, I want to install a passenger side mirror how do you do it?thanks

mr69 Mon Aug 31, 2009 8:28 pm

super glue, JB Weld, epoxy pick your poision...

it really depends on the style you're installing, most likely, you will need to drill a hole into the door

It is not easy but you will have to take the door apart and afix a nut on the inside of the hole you drilled to mount the mirror.

Upper hinge pin with threaded top.

Velcro, so you can take it off when there is no passenger!

When I worked at the dealer we used a Karmann Ghia mirror mount and a beetle convertible mirror to install right outside mirrors on 1968 + bugs. It saves you from havng to do any welding or taking the door apart.

I am restoring a '74 Super and was thinking about doing the same thing while I have the doors apart. Here is what I found with my car. The passenger side door has the mirror mounting bracket already welded inside of the door, just like the driver's side. The catch is for some reason, VW left off welding the mounting nut to the bracket. But it doesn't look like it will be too hard to weld the proper nut to the bracket, once I figure out the correct size. I will then have to drill a hole in the outer skin of course but I can create a template from the driver's side door to guide me to the exact spot to drill on the passenger side.

thats the mounting nut.... i just got that and a mirror from cip1, since the door on the bug i picked up had the mirror mounting hole already drilled (cool), and it looks like a stock drill hole, so not sure what year the door came from....

i didn't weld the nut in, just took off the door panel and had a friend hold the mirror in place while i got the nut started from inside the door. once it was started and stiff, i was able to finish tightening it by spinning the mirror clockwise from the outside. its on there pretty good, i'm happy... although i might need to tighten the horizontal placement...

Cool! I didn't know that nut was available from Cip1.

why go to all the trouble, just weld the mirror to the door

The Ghia mount saves all the trouble ti simply mounts with two small stainless screws hidden under a stainless cover and no need to take the door apart. I think the job paid 1.5 hours and it was a 5 minute job.

Has anybody here actually installed a pre1968 (hinge mount) mirror on a late sedan?
There is an advertiser here on the samba who will rent the tool to press out the hinge pin, and I would like to hear from somebody who has actually done it.
Thanks, Mondshine

It has to be a convertible mirror? What are some of the major differences between vert and standard mirror for a 68?

"I think the job paid 1.5 hours and it was a 5 minute job."

that says a lot about dealers...

Here are three of different mounts that were/are available from VW. Pick your style and rock on.

PETETE Sun Nov 01, 2009 9:30 am

use THIS ONE if you don't feel like drilling the door.

PETETE Sun Nov 01, 2009 9:42 am

Now I'm curious to see a picture of a bug with fender mirrors....Any one has a link?

You still need to drill the mounting holes for this one.

Owning a late model vert with a passenger side mirror, I can't remember the last time I used that mirror. Your VW is not a truck or SUV so other than the aesthetics of a right side mirror, you'll be better off just turning your head than trying to use it.
